The KLM Management Traineeship
There are many different traineeships, but just one KLM Management Traineeship. A traineeship at KLM is not just a glorified stepping-stone to a career, or an especially demanding internship. At KLM, we take you seriously right from the start, which means responsibility, delivering a clear result and developing your personality.

The KLM Management Traineeship is a two-year programme designed to fast-track you towards a general management position with KLM. It is intended for young "high potentials" who have what it takes to become part of our future (top) management.
The traineeship is a golden opportunity, but it does demand a lot of you. Modern aviation is highly complex and the demands on your managerial qualities are correspondingly high. So we ask one thing of you: before you complete and return the application form, think carefully whether you are the born leader that we are looking for. Whether you have what it takes to bring out the best in others and in yourself, too. Whether you have the drive and the personality to cope with the many challenges at KLM. In short, whether you have what it takes to become part of our (top) management of the future. If this sounds like you, we'd like to "welcome you aboard". Find out more about the experiences of management trainees
here.

The general requirements we set for participation in the traineeship are:

  • A university (WO) Masters
  • Minimal work experience
  • Excellent command of both written and spoken Dutch
  • Managerial and/or organisational experience

On the KLM Management Traineeship, you will work on developing the competencies that we believe are crucial for successful management, namely:

  • empowering
  • impact
  • interpersonal sensitivity
  • teamwork
  • establishing and maintaining relationships
  • commercial focus
  • problem analysis
  • persuasiveness
  • drive
  • organisational awareness

During the selection procedure, we pay particular attention to your personality and the management experience you have gained so far. Your area of study is less important. During the assessment, we assess the extent to which these competencies are already present. Subsequently, you will develop these further during the traineeship by means of projects, coaching and training.

The project programme

As a management trainee you will work in many areas of KLM, completing four projects at different parts of KLM within a two-year period. Each project lasts six months. In doing this you will get to know the KLM organisation from the perspective of various processes, and also gain a good understanding of the connections between those complex processes.
You write your own plan of action for your project and formulate a clear end result. In the projects you have a great deal of personal responsibility and often fulfil the role of project leader. The content of the projects varies: some are analytical, some operational, another may be strategic, and yet another will have a practical focus. Some are process-oriented, but mostly they are people-oriented. As the demands of the traineeship increase, so the projects become harder and your responsibilities increase.
Three months before completing the traineeship, a final appraisal is conducted, during which we look at whether you have successfully developed your management competencies and are equipped for a managerial position. If you are, we will offer you a permanent contract and a place on our Management Development Programme. Naturally, all of this takes place in consultation with you, with due consideration of your wishes and preferences.

The training programme

Generally speaking, the training programme is designed to develop your competencies, and involves three fixed components which you follow together with the other trainees.
The first is the KLM induction programme "Finding Your Way in KLM" ("Wegwijs In KLM"), in which we familiarise you with the KLM organisation, our products and the dynamic world of the aviation industry.
The second component is the Management Trainee Course, which is devoted to Leadership Development and Personal Effectiveness. The third component is Project Management.
In addition to these components, you can devise your own individual programme tailored to your personal development needs, which might include training in negotiating or giving presentations.

The coaching programme

Of course you're not left completely to your own devices; we provide you with intensive support. You will be assigned a coach from the Management Development department who will support you throughout the entire traineeship. He/she is the ideal person to share your experiences with and help you shape your development. You will also have an experienced KLM Manager as a mentor, who will give you feedback on your personal performance but is not involved in the assessment process.
During the projects you will be assisted by experienced managers who will act as your clients. They will periodically assess you by measuring your performance against the competencies mentioned.
