Gold Standard, approved by WWF
As consumers we can personally ensure that we emit less CO2. We can achieve a great deal by using energy conscientiously and saving it where we can. In areas where this is not possible, Gold Standard climate compensation(PDF, 520KB) initiatives can help to ensure a better climate.
Through customer consultation we know that passengers want to play their own active role in lowering the effect of CO2 emissions. We therefore offer customers a voluntary service called CO2ZERO, where you can compensate for your personal CO2 emissions by investing in sustainable energy projects approved by the World Wide Fund for Nature. Early 2009 the construction of a wind farm started on the isle of Bonaire. The project’s aim is to for the entire island – around 5000 homes and businesses – ultimately to be supplied with 100% renewable energy.
CO2mpensation for Cargo customers
The cargo CO2mpensation service gives an insight in the CO2 emission of shipments and the possibility to compensate (part of) the CO2 emission against the lowest possible rates. As is the case with the compensation service for passengers the entire contribution will be invested completely in renewable energy project with the Gold Standard label.
It bears mentioning that KLM views this form of compensation as a temporary solution. Our ultimate aim is to reduce the volume of CO2 emitted by our aircraft. However, this form of compensation will remain the only alternative until feasible technology is developed to reduce emissions.
