Safety has always been a top priority in KLM’s business operations. Together with Air France, KLM is pursuing an ambitious policy on flight safety, security, passenger health, and crisis management.

Flight safety and security depend on more than the right equipment and procedures. We believe they are primarily driven by professionalism – the efforts and awareness of all ground and flight personnel. This constitutes the foundation of our safety and security policy, which is certified by various different organizations. Every two years, we are subjected to an audit assessing around 900 standards. In October 2008 KLM received once again the IOSA certificate (IATA Operational Safety Audit) of the International Air Transport Association.

KLM has refined its procedures for crisis management. We conduct a full crisis drill several times a year. If necessary, the corporate crisis center can deploy local assistance centers and call on company volunteers to offer additional assistance.

Another project KLM contributes to is the Aviassist program which aims to provide impulses to aviation safety improvements in mainly sub-Saharan African countries.
