    Carlsberg's art collection

    The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek gallery in Copenhagen V was founded in 1888 by brewer Carl Jacobsen. It holds two important collections - one of ancient Mediterranean art, the other of French and Danish art of the 19th and 20th centuries.

    Homage to Danish sculptor

    Thorvaldsens Museum houses a collection of neo-classical sculpture by Bertel Thorvaldsen, one of Denmark's most celebrated artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. It's all housed in the rebuilt Royal Coach House, close to Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen K.

    National collection of masterpieces

    A collection of international and Danish art from the 13th century onwards is displayed at the elegant Victorian State Art Gallery in Copenhagen K's Østre Anlæg park. Displayed chronologically, the 1600 masterpieces range from Titian and Rembrandt to Braque.

    Denmark's past distilled

    The history of Denmark is portrayed at the National Museum, in Copenhagen K. Beginning in prehistoric times 14,000 years ago, the collection includes Eskimo exhibits and a coin collection. The Great Hall of the 18th-century palace is hung with tapestries.

    History brought to life

    Frilandsmuseet open air museum at Lyngby on the edge of Copenhagen whisks visitors back into a vivid recreation of 19th-century Denmark. Complete with period buildings and costumed interpretative staff, it's an absorbing view of Hans Christian Andersen's era.

    Queen Margrethe's residence, Amalienborg Palace is an elegant and remarkably accessible 18th century construction. There are daily ceremonial guard changes and rooms open to public view. The palace is set north of the city centre in Copenhagen K.

    More than 3000 animals are on view at Denmark's biggest zoo in Copenhagen's Fredriksberg. The zoo, which opened 150 years ago, showcases Scandinavian species like musk oxen and reindeer. Visitors take a break in African-themed Café K.

    Built at King Christian IV's orders in the 1630s, the Round Tower (Rundetårn) is Europe's oldest observatory. It has excellent views of Copenhagen V in which it sits, and is a popular spot for couples sharing tender moments.

    Live and interactive exhibitions tell the story of Danish brewing on the impressive original Valby Carlsberg site in Copenhagen V. The Carlsberg Brewery also contains the Jacobsen Brewhouse, producer of speciality beers, and naturally, a bar for sampling them.

    The Little Mermaid Statue

    Copenhagen's fairytale icon

    Symbol of Copenhagen, The Little Mermaid (Den Lille Havfrue) is surprisingly small and set on Langelinie quay. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale character, she was sculpted by Edvard Eriksen and donated in 1913 by brewer Carl Jacobsen.

    Fairground and bandstand

    A leafy Copenhagen institution since 1843, the Tivoli Gardens, in Copenhagen V, features a funfair, as well as hosting shows, film and concerts. There are 38 restaurants to choose from, a wooden rollercoaster called The Demon, and a bandstand.
