Be courteous and dress modestly in this relaxed, but traditional, Muslim sultanate. Men in shorts are acceptable on the beach but long trousers are expected elsewhere. Women should keep upper arms, shoulders and knees covered. Wearing a headscarf is not required for Western women unless they are visiting a mosque.
