Beijing Capital International Airport
The futuristic Beijing Capital International Airport is located to the north east of the city, around 26km (16 miles) from Tiananmen Square. It is China's biggest and busiest airport, transporting more than 44 million passengers annually. The airport's third terminal, designed by Sir Norman Foster to look like a Chinese dragon, opened in 2008.
The airport is served by a wide range of bus routes. The airport shuttle Line 3 runs every 15 minutes to Beijing Railway Station. Routes 2 and 4 run every 10 minutes to Xidan and Gongzhufen respectively. Tickets cost RMB16. For more advice, call the airport bus hotlines on +86 (0) 10 6459 4375/4376. The Inter-Provincial Shuttle (+86 (0)10 6455 8718) runs to Langfang, Tanggu and other destinations; fares start at RMB40.
Taxis wait outside the terminal buildings. Make sure that the meter is running (it almost always is - Beijing taxi drivers are fairly honest). The fare is RMB10 for the first 3 km, then RMB2 for every kilometre thereafter. Leave an hour in case of bad traffic and have your destination written in Chinese characters.
