Review of Oslo
Oslo
Take flights to Oslo for centuries-old Viking ships, thick woollen goods and mouth-watering seafood fresh from the sea.
Things to do
Travel to Oslo’s beginnings at the Viking Ship Museum. Stroll past towering, 9th-century Viking ships discovered in royal tombs, their scrolled prows, dragon carvings and hand-cut hulls mementos of the Vikings’ sailing and artistic genius.
Shopping
Before return flights from Oslo, fill your bags with Norway’s richly coloured woollen sweaters and scarves - tiny reindeer and snowflakes woven into their designs. Store windows display stacks of cosy pullovers and blankets along Karl Johans Gate, Oslo’s pedestrian shopping centre.
Restaurants
Explore the old wharf, Aker Brygge, once Oslo’s shipyard, for sunny sidewalk cafés dishing up freshly caught seafood. Fill up on plates of delicate halibut and salmon, or try a grilled reindeer steak with Carlsberg beer.
Nightlife
Buy tickets to Oslo Concert Hall, home of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Norway’s largest pipe organ. Relax over an evening of inspired classical music, perhaps composed by Norwegian native Edvard Grieg.
When to go
KLM has frequent flights to Oslo. Time your Oslo city break to celebrate Constitution Day on 17 May, or visit in winter, when the skiing is best and the Northern Lights might be glowing.
