The year kicks off with the Semana de Lima (12-19 Jan), with open-air performances in the summer sunshine in celebration of the city's foundation in 1535. See the beautiful purebred Peruvian paso horses at the May Peruvian Paso Gymkhana in Pachacámac, and celebrate Peruvian Independence (28-29 Jul). Lima's biggest annual shindig is the show-stopping Señor de los Milagros in October, where thousands of the faithful don purple for a huge religious procession. November sees the Feria del Señor de los Milagros bullfights.

The founding of Lima, the "City of Kings", in 1535 is celebrated feverishly every year on 18 January. In the Plaza de Armas, dance and music concerts featuring Peruvian stars kick start celebrations the night before.
