Join the full-on party celebrations at Surifesta (Dec-Jan) when musicians, artists and street jugglers take to the streets. February to March, enter into Paramaribo-style revelry as the Carnival season takes hold, complete with costumed dancers, street processions, marching bands and floats. July honours the end of slavery on Emancipation Day with Suriname's Independence Day celebrated with gusto in November each year.

Suriname gained its independence from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975, now a national holiday and an annual cause for celebration. Jolly festivities take over Independence Square, unsurprisingly, and the Palm Gardens at the Presidential Palace in Paramaribo for Srefindesi.
