Restaurants in Moscow

Moscow's restaurant scene has exploded in recent years, with international options throughout the city, but particularly in upmarket neighbourhoods like Kuznetsky Most and Patriarch's Ponds. Affordable choices, and many 24-hour options, can be found around the main streets - Arbat and Tverskaya - and at great-value buffet chain Grably. Georgian and Azerbaijani eateries, like Shesh Besh, are normally a safe bet. Most restaurants open 12pm-12am. Service is not usually included - 15% is about right.

While each of its three floors is a perfect 19th-century recreation, including a pharmacy, library and roof terrace, the Café Pushkin, steps from central Pushkinskaya Ploshad, was rebuilt from scratch in 1999. Weekday business lunch options, with traditional Russian specialities including stroganoff and borscht, are available at reasonable prices.Show this on map

The red and gold stained-glass roof of the Metropol Zal at the Moscow Metropol Hotel is the crowning glory of this fin-de-siècle treasure trove and offers European and Russian cuisine amid the marble columns. The hotel was once home to the Bolsheviks' Executive Committee, ironically placed behind Karl Marx's statue on Teatralnaya Ploshad.Show this on map

Designed like a Soviet-era Metro station, with individual 'carriages' and an unfortunate maitre d' in a ticket booth, Metro is a friendly pivnaya (beer bar), popular with the after work crowd who come here for sosiski (sausages) and Russian comfort food. Although south of town in Taganka, it's packed every night, so reservations are essential.Show this on map
