Top-end, mid-range, budget

Terrace cafés cluster along the cours Saleya. Old Nice offers Niçoise and Mediterranean cuisine, while Central Nice offers everything from Japanese to Lebanese restaurants. Head to the promenade des Anglais for Michelin-starred cuisine at Le Chantecler or choose La Zucca Magica in Nice Port for the Riviera's best vegetarian food. Meals are usually served 12pm-2pm and 7pm-10pm. Service, at 12.5%, is generally included but check the bill.

La Petite Maison

Flamboyant Niçoise menu

La Petite Maison serves upmarket regional cuisine with favourites such as zucchini-blossom fritters and baked sea bass in rock salt. Presided over by the flamboyant Nicole, this busy tavern in Old Nice is always packed with locals, celebrities, politicians and beautiful people. Diners should book a few days in advance to avoid disappointment.

Designer Italian cuisine

Finish chef Jouni Tormanen conjures up gastronomic Italian cuisine at La Réserve de Nice near Nice Port. Popular with diners in designer clothes who come for the customised menus and sectacular views over the Mediterranean Sea, this upmarket restaurant isn't cheap. However, there is also a more informal Mediterranean bistro.

Michelin-starred dining

The training ground for many of the finest French Riviera chefs, Le Chantecler is an upmarket restaurant at the renowned Hôtel Negresco in Central Nice. Brasserie Flo

Theatrical French restaurant

Located off place Masséna in Central Nice, Brasserie Flo is Nice's most bustling brasserie. With its high frescoed ceilings and open-plan kitchen set up on the curtained stage, this former music hall provides a dramatic setting for its traditional French cuisine. Signature dishes include sea bream flambéed in pastis and farm-reared lamb brochettes.

La Merenda

Homely Mediterranean menu

The ex-chef of Le Chantecler, Dominique Le Stanc, gave up his Michelin stars to open the tiny La Merenda bistro in the Old Town. Slow-cooked lamb and orange-flavoured oxtail feature on his Mediterranean menus that are written on chalk boards each day. They don't accept credit cards (cash only) and there's no phone so turn up early.

A taste of Périgord

The Bordeaux-wine-coloured walls and tablecloths set the scene at Le Tire-Bouchon in Old Nice. A well-established restaurant, it is popular with local residents and a good choice for a romantic dinner. It offers specialities of south-western France such as foie gras, onion soup with a crusty top and cassoulet (Toulouse pork-and-bean stew).

French bistro

With its banquette seating and red-and-white gingham tablecloths, Au Petit Gari is an unashamedly old-fashioned bistro. Set beneath the arcades of the Place Garibaldi in Old Nice, this homely restaurant serves traditional French dishes such as scallops with melted cheese, grilled duck breast and rabbit pâté with prunes. Don't miss the melt-in-your-mouth cheese selection.

Lebanese mezze

L'Ybane is a trendy Lebanese restaurant in the Old Town that oozes contemporary style. Diners mix with fashionable young Niçois (locals) and enjoy mezze (snack) dishes such as taboulé salad, hummus, falafel, meatballs, salad and flatbreads. Another branch has opened in nearby Rue de la Préfecture.

La Zucca Magica

Italian-inspired vegetarian dishes

La Zucca Magica along Nice Port serves the best vegetarian cuisine on the French Riviera. A relative of Luciano Pavarotti, larger-than-life chef Marco has a loyal following of locals that love his fixed-price menus stuffed with Italian cheeses and pasta. The pumpkin-inspired décor might not be to everyone's taste, but the lasagne should be.
