    Transportation in Newcastle

    Foot

Newcastle is an ideal city for exploring on foot, with broad pedestrianised streets in the city centre making it easy and safe to get around. The waterside is also a great place to go walking – with the pedestrian only Millennium Bridge offering an easy way across the river to Gateshead.

    Underground

The Tyne and Wear Metro extends throughout the region, and is a very convenient way to get around both Newcastle and Gateshead, and it also runs to the airport. It's quick and efficient, and ticket prices are low by British standards.

    Coach

Buses are plentiful in and around Newcastle, linking the city with many other districts. The most useful services for the visitor are the distinctive yellow electric-powered Quaylink buses, which travel between the major transport interchanges at Haymarket, Monument, Gateshead and the Quayside.

    Taxi

Taxis are a popular option late at night, but be prepared to queue for some time if trying to get one on a Friday or Saturday evening. Many drivers have undertaken special training to enable them to share their expert knowledge of the area with visitors.

    Rent your car

Newcastle can be reached via A1(M) motorway from London and other cross-country routes but in the city centre the Tyne Tunnel gets congested. Construction is underway on a new Tyne crossing to ease this. Parking includes nine multi-storey and over 30 off-street car parks, as well as on-street parking.

    Transportation tips

A Day Rover gives unlimited travel on all Tyne and Wear transport, giving substantial savings on single fares. If planning to go further afield, a North East Explorer ticket covers the entire region. It is also possible to buy a Metro Day Saver, giving unlimited use of the Metro network.
