Restaurants in Rio de Janeiro

High-end establishments in smart Leblon cluster around restaurant row Rua Dias Ferreira. For innovative Brazilian cuisine with a French twist, reserve a table at Chef Roland Villard’s award-winning Le Pré-Catelan in Copacabana. Travel back in time with a visit to the opulent 19th-century Confeitaria Colombo tearoom in downtown Rio. Kitchens are usually open until midnight. Most downtown restaurants are closed for dinner and do not operate on Sundays. A 10-12% service charge is generally included, but check the bill.

Bibi also sells hamburgers, grilled-cheese sandwiches, and a variety of Brazilian savory pastries.

Confeitaria Colombo

Timeless style

This stunning Victorian tearoom hasn't changed much since it opened in 1894. Two large counters at the entrance serve up sweets and snacks with coffee or other refreshments. The rest of the ground floor features an elegant tearoom, where a variety of teas, sandwiches, and sweets are served on fine china underneath a '20s stained-glass window. The upstairs is for full lunches -- on Saturdays the feijoada (black beans and pork stew) is worth a trip downtown. Tip: A branch of the Confeitaria Colombo is inside the Forte Copacabana, with a smaller menu but fabulous views.

Paladino

Deli diner

Is Paladino a deli, with jars of capers and artichoke hearts? Is it a liquor store with hundreds of bottles? Or is it a bustling lunch bar with some of the best draft beer in town? What matters is that the beer is cold and comes at the wave of a finger, the atmosphere is Belle Epoque, and the sandwiches and snack plates are delicious.
