Transportation in Panama City
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and home to one end of the world-famous Panama Canal, Panama City is probably Central America's most cosmopolitan city.The compact city centre boasts an impressive skyline as well as many of the city's top restaurants and hotels.In the centre you'll find the business-oriented neighbourhoods of El Cangrejo and El Area Bancaria. Head south to Casco Viejo, the old town, for old-world charm. For spectacular panoramic views, go north to Cerro Ancon and west for family-friendly fun on the laid-back Amador Causeway.

Taxi
This is the fastest and easiest way to get around town. Taxis are cheap, plentiful, safe and can be hailed on the street. Drivers tend to pick up other passengers going in your direction, so if you want to travel solo, be sure to tell the driver when you get in.
Foot
Attractions are scattered throughout the city's various neighbourhoods, so walking is often not an option. However, Casco Viejo and the Amador Causeway are best explored on foot. Enjoy Casco Viejo's centuries-old plazas or watch the sun rise over the Pacific from the Amador Causeway.
Bus
'Red Devils', as local buses are known, cover just about every corner of the city, but they aren't the fastest or safest way to get around. The destination of any bus is posted on the front window. The city has been planning a modern bus transit system for a number of years but, for now, the bus system is a chaotic network of confusing routes. Buses are not recommended for visitors, especially considering the low cost of taxis.
Car
Hiring a car allows most freedom and flexibility, but is recommended for experienced, defensive drivers only. Congestion and aggressive drivers make this option a potentially stressful one. Rental rates are competitive.
Rent your car
Panama City has several modern roads but the traffic can be very heavy and its web of streets takes time to get to know. You’ll need to watch out for drivers nudging out of side streets and motorbikes slipping between lanes of traffic.
Transportation Tips
Using a hotel taxi can cost you three times as much as a street taxi. Avoid walking alone in the Casco Viejo neighbourhood at night, as tourists have been targeted for robberies.
