Transportation in Cape Town
Taxi
Metered taxi cabs don't cruise the streets waiting to be hailed (except outside nightclubs), they are usually ordered in advance. When locals talk about taxis, they are referring to battered minibuses that cram in as many people as possible and drive like lunatics to and from townships.
Car
The best way to get around is to hire a car. Signposts are generally good, although your route is not always direct, as mountains can get in the way.
Foot
Discover the small and quirky by walking the streets of Cape Town, which will come alive all the more if accompanied by a guide. Take the precaution of removing flashy jewellery, keeping handbags closed and cameras tucked away.
Coach
Since it was introduced in 2010, Cape Town's MyCiTi bus service has been a huge success. There are currently two main lines - F1, serving the inner city from Gardens to the Waterfront, and T1, which runs from Table View to the Civic Centre.
Rent your car
Although Cape Town's public-transport system is being improved, the car remains the best way to get around. With main highways linking the city to the interior and downtown it’s easy to get your orientation if you can see Table Mountain and Robben Island.
Transportation tips
Not all petrol stations accept credit cards so ensure you have cash before filling up your car. You don't have to serve yourself - this, plus a windscreen clean, water and oil check is done for you in anticipation of a small tip.
