    Transportation in Frankfurt

Discover Frankfurt's half-timbered old town in the centre, then explore trendy Bornheim and traditional Sachsenhausen. The River Main flows from east to west and Frankfurt's old town lies just north of it. The skyscraper-studded business district sprawls to the west before giving way to the multicultural surrounds of the main train station. Head south to the narrow streets of Sachsenhausen, or east to the village-like atmosphere of Bornheim.

    Underground

Frankfurt's underground network, or U-Bahn, is a quick and very convenient way to get around the city. There are seven lines and the system runs from 4am to 2am.

    Tram

The tram, or Strassenbahn, is the overground alternative to the U-Bahn and is an ideal way of seeing the city while travelling. Tickets are always valid for both U-Bahn and Strassenbahn.

    Foot

In the city centre, walking is the best way of exploring and uncovering less obvious streets and attractions. From the main railway station, it takes 15 minutes to reach the centre.

    Bus

The bus network is extensive and reliable. As with all public transport in the city, don't forget to validate your ticket when you board. Night buses run from 1am to 5am.

    Taxi

Beige Mercedes taxis are instantly recognisable. Hail one on the street, or call the central taxi office on +49 (0) 69 250 001 to arrange one in advance. Taxi drivers expect a tip of 5-10%.

    Rent your car

Being Germany’s financial capital, Frankfurt has plenty of business visitors coming and going by car. Needless to say, there are motorways leading across, around and out of the city. The centre is restricted to cars displaying a low-emission sticker but there are park-and-ride sites in the outskirts.

    Transportation Tips

A day ticket is good value if you make extensive use of public transport and is valid for U-Bahn, trams and buses.
