    Amsterdam

Flights to Amsterdam bring you to a maze of quaint canals lined houseboats, mansions and galleries.

    Things to do

On your Amsterdam holiday, hire a bicycle to explore the side-streets and canals in the arty Jordaan neighbourhood. Specialist shops and quirky galleries hide away down small-scale streets, and there’s always a cosy brown café to rest weary legs.

    More things to do

    Shopping

Amsterdammers love their markets. At the vibrant Waterlooplein flea market, join them to browse for vintage clothes or jewellery. With over 300 stands, you’re bound to find that perfect souvenir from your Amsterdam trip.

    More shopping

    Restaurants

Stepping off their flights to Amsterdam, visitors can find traditional neighbourhood eetcafes, bistro-like eateries, in De Pijp neighbourhood. Fill up on hearty dishes like crunchy bitterballen meatballs and hutspot stew, washed down with refreshing witbier.

    More restaurants

    Nightlife

Amsterdam’s nightlife is as laid-back or raucous as you want. On your Amsterdam trip, join music lovers at the landmark Melkweg, a former dairy factory close to Leidseplein with spaces for live music, from local jazz bands to big-name international acts.

    More nightlife

    When to go

KLM has frequent flights to Amsterdam. Book a holiday to experience the orange-clad festivities at April’s Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day) or the classical music-filled Grachtenfestival in August.

    1. Why everybody should enjoy Amsterdam15 May 13

It is probably the most interesting European city - because it has a little bit of everything for everyone, not to mention its own ''specialties''. So the thing is, if you're Mexican and want to eat good Mexican food, you will most definitely find a place to do so. Amsterdam is cool, yet classic, it's charming in all possible ways. The canals are amazing - cos I know for sure why they call it the Venice of the North. People are very sociable and the greatest thing is that they all speak English - good English. I don't enjoy hot weather, as a matter of fact, and I enjoy going back to Amsterdam (Netherlands in general) especially for their weather which for me is quite on the verge of perfect. Amsterdam is a very clean place, despite what some would think or others would say, it is a really clean city and by this I don't mean only the outlook of the sidewalks but also the perfect order that seems to go hand in hand with the city, the balance of colours and green space and buildings, water and - oh, my personal favourite! - tulips when in season. Amsterdam is not a tiring city, nor a very relaxing one - it very much depends on what you're looking forward to. But I would say that it is a good city for both young and old people to visit. What I can say is that, if you're a parent, you should be your kid's eyes and ears (if you know what I mean) because they can get to see some shocking things on the streets (giggles...) - Amsterdam truly is the place where you get to see it all. Means of transportation are just great - plenty, clean, easy to access. Shopping is for all sorts of pockets - I did amazing shopping near the Madame T museum, really cheap, great clothing and accesories. Accommodation is good and also for all types of pockets, service is more than decent. All in all, I would recommend this city to everyone that thinks Europe's beauty narrows down to just Rome and Paris and to everyone that wants to have the greatest city break of them all - but mind this, Amsterdam deserves more than just 3 days of your life!

    5. Amsterdam for seniors09 May 13

Very good. Obviously 4 nights was insufficient, but I would recommend public transport and free ferries, Botanic Gardens, and museums. In our case the q was too long at the Rijksmuseum, but try the Maritime one. The city was very bust while we were there as it was a holiday which coincided with the abdication/coronation.

Get a transport card (on trams up to 24 hours validity) but from tourist offices 48 hrs is better value.Take a canal trip as an early priority to suss out best places to go. Avoid Rijksmuseum queues if possible or skip it. Be very careful to ensure you can manage hotel staircases or avoid such hotels.

    6. Love Amsterdam!08 May 13

I love that Amsterdam is so walkable, open and friendly. My favorite part is the city's architecture and canals. Museums are visitor's friendly and interesting.(My favorite were I Rembrandt's house and Van Gogh's museum.) Variety of restaurants and shops are abundant, for everybody's taste. (My favorite were open air markets.)

Living in Kent. it was so easy flying from Manston, airborne only 35 minutes. Amsterdam is a friendly small city with a sensible traffic system safely separating cyclists, cars and trams which makes getting around simple. I managed to cover most of the famous sites and sights in a few days, including a restful canal boat trip. Next time I'll hire a bike and explore more of the 'backwater' spots but thoroughly enjoyed my first visit.

Our cameras were clicking 24/7 and we have wonderful memories of the canals, beautiful architecture and constant buzz that is Amsterdam. One day we'll be back .. when its Spring again and the tulips are in bloom. Thank you Amsterdam!

Having been a bit overworked and depressed I took a 2 day break in the peaceful, quaint friendly town of Weesp enjoying the bars and eating exceptional food at Rubens on Herengracht. Sunday was spent wandering the shops and cafes of my favourite city Amsterdam where everything stays top notch. Fabulous city Plenty to do. Only thing that spoils amsterdam are the pick pockets. I was very lucky that the waiter was suspisious of people sitting behind me in a restaurant. So tourists need to be very vigilant with their bags. Loved the museums, anne franks hose and enjoyed a visit to harleem were we did the Corrie Ten Boom tour of house. Very brave lady. We had not visited Amsterdam before so this was our first explore. What an excellent city - its picturesque, busy when you want it quiet when you don't, loads of cultural facilities and a populous that seems to welcome and help no matter what. For a capital city it's one of the friendliest places we have ever been and so easy to get around. We used the train, tram, bus and boats - all very easily and managed to get to where we wanted to be every time. We did do a great deal of walking (you do have to watch out for the bicycles). The food and restaurants were brilliant, I won't say they were all the best food in the world but we were never disappointed. Some peoples reviews gave us to expect a great deal of expense but we found the restaurants, bars and cafes to be quite reasonable. We stayed in the Jordaan district which was close to all facilities yet very quiet - we always take ear plugs but they were not required.

You may have to wait for a table- if you do have time - wait. Anne Frank museum - just so moving - go early to miss the crowds. Van Gogh exhibition- we saw it at the Hermitage but it should be back in its own home soon.

What can I say? .. Amsterdam was incredible. No, I didn't have any funny cakes, in fact, I didn't need to; the atmosphere and friendliness of the locals was so infectious that it left me 'buzzing' all weekend long. My trip to Amsterdam meant that I had lots of adventures along the way, from; Anne Frank's house, trip down the canal and even the s*x museum - It had to be done! I was lucky enough to have some splendid sunny days, so after a day at the fantastic park - next door to the hard rock cafe, I was heading home. This was indeed very sad, however one thing I do know, I will be back! KLM were fabulous and the service is, in my opinion, world class. Thank you to the team at KLM, and the locals in Amsterdam for providing a perfect weekend! @lesta_lad

Just back from my second visit to Amsterdam ! Traveled with klm had a very pleasant flight staff were really nice , my flight leaving was wright on time but a little delayed on return flight but that didn't bother me at all ... I stated at the citizen m hotel witch is 6 mins from air port on a €3 train ride , the hotel is trendy and spotless and staff can't do enough for u and all have perfect English , u can catch the tram outside hotel for €2.60 and in ten min u r in Amsterdam city centre although we thought the area close by the hotel was much much more pleasant ... Eating out and drinking in Amsterdam can be pretty expensive unless u look hard for cheaper options the average drink in bars is about €5 for a vodka and diet coke witch would cost arround £2.50 at home and about €3.50 for a small beer wen u could get a pint at home for less so be prepared to dig deep . There are lots of steak houses in Amsterdam but the best I ate in was called cau on damstraat ! Very trendy and steak cooked to perfection and service was fab although it is not the cheapest place to eat but worth going the one time

Five years ago I was privileged to have attended a prestigious school for two months in The Netherlands. This trip was to reunite with several of my friends/class colleagues and continue from when we first met at school. This trip involved visits to Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Valkenburg, Geldrop, Amersfoort, Delft, Ijmuiden, Zeist and many other stops along the way. It was so much fun seeing my friends, enjoying great food and lots of wonderful laughter and conversations. The many memories will last a lifetime! I love flying KLM. I love travelling the railway lines in Europe ... the destinations are endless, in the country and beyond. Visiting art galleries is a must! I purchased a Museumkaart to visit the many art galleries. It is good for 1 year and applies to just about every gallery in The Netherlands. Great saving! Doing a little shopping is always fun and a must in The Netherlands. Shoes are one of my favorite purchases! Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities in the world and it is always great when the chance becomes available to return. My passport is always read for travel adventure!

Whilst the weather was cold and snowy during my visit, I found that the Public Transport system worked perfectly. With the Oyster type card the movement into and around the city of Amsterdam was relatively cheap and very easy to use. All transport during the day was frequent and on time. What was even more noticeable was the smooth state of the Dutch roads compared with the potholed roads of Scotland. However visitors to Amsterdam should check about access to certain Museums as some are closed due to renovation.

While our travel to the Amsterdam I became familiar with a lot of persons, form different countries and nationalities. We all together communicated, shared our view, opinions. The one inspiring thing during this trip is that I became familiar with my good friend, his name is Dima, he is form Ireland, and he also decided to visit Amsterdam on the last minute. He was carrying, attentive, and polite. We have visited a lot of places during our two days trip, we also visited park of flowers Keukenhof. Atmosphere of this park was amazing full of sweet smells of the flowers, and plenty of colours. We were full of gentle feelings, happy views, and full of energy which we took in this park, looking on the field of flowers. I also wanted with group to visit Madame Tussauds museum, but guide told that we wouldn't able to visit as it will close in 40 min. In spite of this we decided to find museum by ourselves, it was easier to find due to the convenient location and advices of the habitants, in spite of the time limit we made photos with all famous persons in the Museum. We also visited streets of red lamp, interesting, a lot of places we visited, and a lot of information, opinions, we received. Trip to Amsterdam helped us to feel atmosphere of freedom, show our feelings plenty of colours and emotions, not to hide, and aspiration to achieve our aims.

Even if you do not have enough time or possibilities, you have to visit Amsterdam in order to the change your view, to receive adrenalin, to have new friends, experience to travel. I think it is amazing when you visit another country, it may considerably change your bad mood, attitude to smth., be positive, to be full off energy and positive emotions. There are a lot of places to visit park of flowers, museums, bars, shoping,etc.. even the small streets, allow you to become familiar with history, tradition, country, people, amazing atmosphere full of energy.

Amsterdam has one of the best public transport systems around. Cheap & reliable, the 72 hour card is great value. Friendly people, speaking enough English to be helpful, but making sure ch is the first language, so you need to give it a try which is good for lazy English speakers! The RAI was an experience - huge, but very well organised. lots of information available, but felt a little short on seating in the catering areas. Main problem was that Amsterdam was generally very expensive for eating & drinking - much higher prices than in many other European cities.

I have traveled to Amsterdam many times now. And, each time I discover something new and find hidden gems. One thing that never changes is the the cozy feeling only Amsterdam can give! I have met the loveliest people when I ventured outside the touristy areas. Traveling solo? No problem. Amsterdam has proven to be very safe! If you think you know all there is to know about this fabulous city...go again. There's always more!

Been to AMS many times , however have to say this will be our last, its now incredibly over rated and well over priced, its not worth the journey or expenses, eating out in Amsterdam, will hurt your pocket big time a sandwich shop 23 euros for a piece of pizza a small sandwich and a cake 15 euros for 2 flamed burgers and two hot chocs , not forgetting they charge 50 cents for tomato sauce your hotel will slug you 6.50 for a beer from the mini bar or 3.00 for a water plus around 8 euros each city taxes as you check out a pint of beer on the sidewalk cafes 8/10 euros its insane bye bye AMS

There are many wonderful apartments to rent that are around 4 star and at 3 star prices .

The weather can change quickly, always have a jacket or sweater ready if needed. You can purchase Euro's at one of the counters at Schiphol Airport for a resonable rate. I had a great experience in Amsterdam in the sense that I met up with old friends after my meeting and we went out to see the sights and take in the Amsterdam culture and nightlife. "Coffee Shops", the Red Light District, pubs, clubs and the main square. Its a beautiful city with all walks of life. We had a great time. My only complaint would be the Amsterdam airport where security was a nightmare. They did not have the capacity to handle so many people, and our flight was delayed as a result.

As an 80 year old, not having been in Amsterdam for over 40 years I was so pleased to see how harmoniously the city has developed so that its wonderful picturesque buildings are hosting the new additions. The transport system from canal boats to trams and trains were coping well with a busy tourist week-end. I was disappointed I had to travel out to the Rijksmuseum to find it was only partially open and the contents of the Van Gogh transferred to another museum, both due to major refurbishment. More publicity to these facts should have been given in tourist information. The city still has its old-world charm and the Shipping museum re-told the wonderful record of this early trading nation, particularly with the Dutch East Indies. The week -end was most enjoyable as I met my son there who was on a business visit from the U.S.A.. I have decided already to bring my daughter and son-in-law for a similar week end in Spring when the Van Gogh re-opens on 14th April 2013.

I have to say that people in Amsterdam are very friendly. My wife and I were for a night in Amsterdam, thou we arrived late in the afternoon, we immediately got redy for a walk, and we thought about make in it to downtown, it was a wonderfl idea. We stay in the Wyndham Apollo Hotel, at our arrival we were welcome with wine, then we were asked if we wanted a view of the river, we agreed immediatelly, the room well decorated and the accomodations wonderful. Then we decide to start our walk, there were cyclist, which immediately point at us that the side walks are divided for traseunt and cyclist, there were a group of people and we asked them how to get to downtown, immediately the said in two blocks you can take the Tram # 5, we got there on time, as soon as we were getting in the driver welcome us, I asked him where can we get out, he immediately said Central Station, he was very corteous and told us a little bit of our route and where to pick uo the tram on they way back, but he also said they finish in 2 hours, for us 2 hours was to short then he said there are Taxi's every where. Well to make it short we have the best time of all our trip even though was one night, we returned to the hotel. Next day we were to be picked up by a Taxi and for our surprise it was Mercedes. We were laughing because we had so many surprises to our trip. Our trip started in Houston, Texas - Amsterdam - Madrid - Vigo, Spain - Paris - Amsterdam. I should it started with the first surprise when we arrived in Amsterdam the first time, on our plane from Houston to Amsterdam was an Astronaut and on our arrival to Amsterdam there were Fire trucks trowing water over the plane, is a kind of Welcoming the Astronaut. Then on our trip from Amsterdam to Madrid, we had the same reception but this time the Pilot was his last trip... he was retiring... there were many other surprises... but that will be on another ocassion. Thanks for the Magnificent stay in Amsterdam... we will return.

All activities were easy to book and get to - slight queue at Ann Franks but nothing too bad and all reasonably priced. The city itself is buzzing and I felt very safe at all times. A great variety of restaurants to choose from. Sadly the weather was bad - non stop rain but that didn't dampen our spirits! A brilliant escape for 48 hours and onlu one hour away.

Me and my friends agree that Amsterdam is the happiest place on earth. Even with doef weather in summertime (combination of high humidity, pressure, rainshowers, thunderstorms, and alternating sunshine), i still believe it is the most abundantly blessed region in the world. We hope to someday have another reunion in the city. The last time we did was bleak winter on the icy streets of Dam Square. But even then, we were very happy... the city has that particular infectious energy.

Pickpockets can be a problem. Always hold on to your purse, camera, & billfold in large crowds. I've never had a problem but the locals say it's quite a problem all over Europe. Travel the countryside by train and visit the entire country. If you rent a car, the whole country is only 2 hours across. Enjoy the art galleries, cathedrals and canal boats.

    62. Sunny Amsterdam31 May 12

I arrived on a sunny afternoon after a very quick flight with KLM. I explored the shops, walked along the canals and through the Vondelpark and rested in the cafes. During my stay I travelled by train, tram and boat. I was impressed by the smoothness of transport connections, loved watching the many cyclists and boats and enjoyed a trip on a canal boat which took us as far as the harbour where a massive cruise liner was in dock. I loved the quaint shops, bridges and general quirkiness of the place. The people are friendly and most of them communicate easily in English. It's a clean, bright, lively place with culture, music and places to relax in. The street markets are great too.

Take lots of pictures and videos. Go to the Rijksmuseum and the Diamond Museum. Take a trip or two on the canal boats. Go the the street markets and take plenty of Euro or credit cards and be prepared to shop. Also beware of pickpockets so have a secure bag or discreet place to put your wallet or card holder.

If you ever get the chance to go to Amsterdam, don't miss it. The city is indeed very beautiful and has a lot of exciting things to offer. Everybody can find something to do, either visit a museum, walk along the channels or simply enjoy a coffee in the city center. After a couple of visits, I feel like I got home everytime I land at Schiphol Airport!

After living in Amsterdam for 4 years and having made the trip through Schiphol many times for business purposes, it is always a pleasure to revisit Amsterdam for pleasure. Amsterdam is NOT Holland, so if you want to see the real Netherlands make sure to take daytrips to the sea, the Keukenhof, etc.. But Amsterdam is a complex mix of old Holland, Arts, and History and the new. Nothing is more charming than renting a bike and peddling past the canals late at night, or sitting at the terrace of de Jaaren and having a cold beertje or a great coffee while time passes by. On every trip there is something new to discover and something familiar to come back "home' to. Discover your own Amsterdam and make it yours. Enjoy!

My last trip in October was to act as guide for someone new to Amsterdam. We visited museums and took a cruise and wandered around to soak up the flavor of Amsterdam for three days. I found an antique clock in a wonderful little shop and even picked up Ukrainiann pemeni and pomadore.

Get an I amsterdam City Card for lots of discounts if you are staying two or three days. Well worth it! The only downside to the trip was that I was pickpocketed for the second time in ten years. If the pickpocket wants your money in Amsterdam he, or she, is going to get it. Despite my efforts I was victimized, again, getting off the street car in front of the Rijskmuseum. My best advice is leave your wallet in your hotel safe, carry one credit card and a little cash around your neck and good luck. Get the

Its charm, its history, its allure, its sounds, and its sights.......Amsterdam surpassed every expectation. We tasted some of the best foods, walked along charming canals, and saw the most impressive art work......Hospitality reigns supreme here and the "frites" will make you beg for more. Amsterdam may be the gateway to Europe, but don't make the mistake to rush through it! Stop long enough to smell the flowers on the flowermarkt, or be blinded by the diamonds being cut! There is more to see and do within one square kilometer, than in most other world cities.

I had a grand day out in Amsterdam, a day before my return home. Amsterdam was a mix of the old and the new.. I was completely awed by the old buildings and the modern facilities. I had a great day of shopping and the street artists on the streets were so COOL! I will be coming back this April as I want to see the flower festival and Queen's Day.. I have a couple of orange outfits to choose from already! I wish I could spend a day more and experience night life in Amsterdam (hope to win the sweepstakes)
