Foot
Walking is the best way to explore the historical sights of the city centre, as well as the extensive woods, parkland and art museums in Ibirapuera Park.
Taxi
After dark or outside the limited underground network, the only really practical way to get around São Paulo is by taxi. Hail one in the street or ask the hotel or restaurant to call one. There are always plenty around and the price is reasonable but allow plenty of time in case you get stuck in the city's frequent gridlock.
Underground
São Paulo's efficient and modern underground network, or metrô, is often the quickest way to get around the central districts, though it does not cover the rest of the city. From 2014 the new ‘yellow line' should be complete, adding Morumbi and Vila Sônia into the network.
Rent your car
Traffic jams are a regular occurrence in São Paulo, so there is restricted access to the inner ring road during peak times. You should be defensive when driving, particularly at night. Signs indicate where you can park on the street; you might need to buy a zona azul parking card from newsstands.
Transportation tips
Most Paulistanos travel everywhere by car, and outside the centre the city's geography is mostly car-orientated, so consider hiring a vehicle for exploring the suburbs. If you plan to frequently eat out and enjoy the nightlife in well-heeled Jardins and the surrounding neighbourhoods, it is better to stay in a hotel there, as taking taxis from the centre can eat into your time and budget.
