8. Aldea - Mid-range
Show moreChefs sometimes get carried away with their own ambitions and distract from the food. At the very pleasant, low-key Aldea, I’m glad to report that chef George Mendes keeps it simple, letting the fresh, first-rate ingredients shine without too much accompaniment. Though he is Portuguese American, only traces of Portuguese cooking can be found in his appetizers and petiscos (small bites.)

9. A Voce Columbus Circle - Mid-range
Show moreThe original A Voce off Madison Park has always been popular, but this one, which opened in 2009 in the Time Warner Center and has a picture windows overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park, is even better. 10. Barbounia - Mid-range

12. Katz's Delicatessen - Budget
Show moreFounded in 1888, this place is suitably Noo Yawk, with dill pickles, Dr. Brown’s cream soda, and old-world attitude to spare. Take a ticket and either head for the cafeteria-style line, or sit in the “waiter service” area. One word of caution: Katz’s has become a tourist destination, so if you see a tour bus parked in front, you can expect a long wait.

The only indication it’s here is a little neon sign at the end of a curtained hallway. Order one of the fine, juicy burgers and enjoy the determinedly hash-house setting.
