Transportation in São Paulo
You can only really appreciate the sheer size of São Paulo from the air as you arrive (or take a spin in one of the city's famous helicopters). But most sites of interest are part of a walkable circuit in the centre, and evening destinations are just a taxi ride away. Most attractions cluster in the central neighbourhoods and the city's reliable underground network makes getting around this part straightforward.Find traces of São Paulo's colonial past in the centre. South of wide Avenida Paulista, the affluent neighbourhoods of Jardins and Pinheiros contain the city's finest shops and restaurants, or travel on to Vila Olímpia to hit trendy nightclubs. Further out in the suburbs, green Morumbi has some unusual attractions.

Metrô
São Paulo's efficient and modern underground network, or metrô, is often the quickest way to get around the central districts, though it does not cover the rest of the city. From 2012 a new ‘yellow line' should bring Jardins, Pinheiros and Morumbi into the network.
Taxi
After dark or outside the limited underground network, the only really practical way to get around São Paulo is by taxi. Hail one in the street or ask the hotel or restaurant to call one. There are always plenty around and the price is reasonable but allow plenty of time in case you get stuck in the city's frequent gridlock.
Foot
Walking is the best way to explore the historical sights of the city centre, as well as the extensive woods, parkland and art museums in Ibirapuera Park.
Rent your car
Traffic jams are a regular occurrence in São Paulo, so there is restricted access to the inner ring road during peak times. You should be defensive when driving, particularly at night. Signs indicate where you can park on the street; you might need to buy a zona azul parking card from newsstands.
Transportation Tips
Most Paulistanos travel everywhere by car, and outside the centre the city's geography is mostly car-orientated, so consider hiring a vehicle for exploring the suburbs. If you plan to frequently eat out and enjoy the nightlife in well-heeled Jardins and the surrounding neighbourhoods, it is better to stay in a hotel there, as taking taxis from the centre can eat into your time and budget.
Special Transportation
Helicopter
São Paulo's busy executives escape the traffic by taking to the air. A whole battalion of helicopters taxi them back and forth, and many office buildings and top hotels have their own heliports. Chopper tours are available if you want a taste of the high life.
