Transportation in Bologna
Bologna's portico-lined streets radiate from Piazza Maggiore, the historic centre's busy heart. Follow the covered porticoes on foot to explore the different districts, protected from sun and rain.Pinpointed by its two medieval towers, Bologna's compact centro storico (historic centre) is enclosed by the ancient city walls, preserving the medieval street plan. Most attractions are easily visited on foot and there are useful buses for longer distances.Bologna's two main thoroughfares meet at Piazza Maggiore square: Via dell'Indipendenza leads north to the station while the ancient Roman Via Emilia, nowadays the city's main shopping hub, runs east-west as Strada Maggiore, Via Rizzoli and Via Ugo Bassi. The vibrant university quarter centres on Via Zamboni in the north-east.

Bus
Bologna's excellent bus system is operated by ATC. It's the cheapest way to get around and services are frequent though crowded at peak hours. The network runs right across the city, with plenty of services targeting the central hub around Piazza Maggiore.
Taxi
Licensed taxis have a sign on the roof and are the best option. The main squares have taxi ranks and the most useful ones are off Piazza Maggiore on Via Rizzoli and Via dell'Indipendenza. You can hail a cab if you see one, or make a booking by phone. You'll be charged extra for luggage and if travelling late at night or on a Sunday.
Foot
With extensive covered porticoes, Bologna is made for walking. Follow the shop-lined arcades south of Piazza Maggiore or just follow your nose and enjoy the experience of strolling through such an easily walkable city.
Rent your car
If you’re staying in the historical centre of Bologna, your hotel will have to organise access – it’s a ZTL area restricting daytime traffic. Then you’ll need a 24-hour P+BUS ticket (€7) allowing you to park on blue lines and ride the bus. There are also outer car parks close to public transport.
Transportation Tips
Buy a day pass, 10-ticket city pass or off-peak Eco Days multi-journey bus pass for travel around central Bologna. Cars are generally not allowed into the city centre. Park at a car park just outside the restricted zone and take a bus into town.
