Transportation in Zurich
Straddling both shores of the Limmat River, which meets the northern end of Lake Zurich, this is a manageable-sized city. Explore the left and right banks, each with its own charm.Zurich's Altstadt (old town) and main tourist sights span both banks of the Limmat River, but nothing is ever very far on foot. Hop on a tram to speed up proceedings.On the left bank, find the railway station, the main commercial and banking districts, elegant shopping parades, and the imposing Fraumünster church. Cross the bridge to the right bank to find the Gothic spires of Grossmünster church, the picturesque Neumarkt old town square, and the popular district of Niederdorf.

Tram
Zurich's extensive tram system runs throughout the city and is well-maintained, fast and relatively cheap. Buy tickets from the automatic vending machines before getting on board. If you're planning a day's sightseeing, the Tageskarte (day travelcard) is good value and allows you to use all buses and trams.
Bus
As with the trams, Zurich's bus network runs from the early morning until midnight and is clean, modern and easy to navigate. Don't forget to buy your ticket at the Haltestelle (bus/tram stop) vending machines before boarding.
Foot
Zurich's quays are ideal for exploring on foot, and many of the city's major attractions, such as the Altstadt (old town), are conveniently clustered close to both banks of the Limmat River.
Boat
Boats in Zurich are not just for lake cruises. Save money and join the locals on the popular "water taxi" trips down the Limmat River. Free on your Tageskarte (day travelcard), this is a great way to watch the bustle of the river quays from the water.
Taxi
Fiercely expensive, Zurich taxis can be hard to find and do serious damage to your bank balance. With the city's great public transport network, cycle paths and walkable areas, taxis should be only a last resort.
Rent your car
Clean, modern highways link Zurich to the rest of Switzerland and other parts of Europe. The best parking option is to buy a daily parking permit for residential blue-zone areas or for long-term parking, you can opt for the airport and use the efficient public transport system.
Transportation Tips
The Zurich Card offers three days' unlimited travel on public transport, as well as free admission to more than 40 museums. Bike is the other alternative. In the summer months, you can hire bicycles free from the main railway station.
