Transportation in Gothenburg
Nestled on the harbourside and canal banks, Gothenburg is a compact city, well served by its famous trams, along with a comprehensive bus network. Many attractions cluster in and around the centre and the city's extensive tram network makes getting around easy, even for first-timers.In the city centre find the principal shopping spots and boat tours around the canal, but head a little way south for the lively entertainment district of Avenyn where many restaurants, bars and nightclubs are situated. Along the harbourside look for the cultural attractions such as the Opera House, and take trips around the port's busy waters.

Tram
Gothenburg's famous tram network is a tourist attraction in itself, the twelve lines criss-crossing all the important areas of the city, although travel can be slow at busy times. In summer, historic vehicles run on selected routes, but most services employ modern tramcars. Buy a Gothenburg Pass for the best value if using public transport in the city.
Bus
Gothenburg's bus network serves destinations spread around the city and its outskirts, and links with the tram lines in many central areas. The main bus terminus is adjacent to the central railway station.
Foot
Walking is often the quickest way to get about for short trips within the compact city centre, as well as being a great way to explore the attractions of the harbourside and the historic streets of Haga Old Town.
Boat
A very pleasant way to see Gothenburg is from the water, and the Älvsnabben Ferry Services ply the harbour from a number of departure points, with others serving the islands of the archipelago. The Paddan Boats are a popular way to travel around the city centre canal.
Taxi
A number of companies operate taxis in the city. They can be taken from strategically located ranks, and are bookable in advance by telephone, and in many cases online.
Rent your car
A car is useful if you’re exploring other parts of Sweden, but you can explore the city centre on foot or via the tram network. The Gőteborg Pass includes parking, public transport and entrance to most attractions, and is valid for 24 or 120 hours.

It represents excellent value, giving unlimited travel on trams, buses and some boat services, plus free admission to attractions and museums, along with some tours, and discounts in selected restaurants and shops.
