Budapest is at the mercy of a typical continental climate, with night-time winter temperatures plumbing the depths to lower than -20°C (-4°F) in January (though the average is a far more reasonable 2°C/36°F). Temperatures can soar in summer to the late thirties (low 100°F), while the average July temperature is 20°C (68°F). The city's thermal bathhouses make the winter season all the more bearable, while air-conditioning is recommended in summer.
