Nightlife in Kiev
Kiev's bars span the city, with smoky clubs and bars lining Kreshchatyk – giving way to leafy outdoor terraces in summer – and the young and beautiful flocking to Arena City at its end. Cool upmarket places like Bar on 8 cluster around the Old Town and increasingly hip Lypky, while summer sees live dance venues and casual beer tents in the parks of Pechersk. Bars stay open into the early hours, and most clubs until 6am.

Politicos' and newsmakers' haunt
A tiny basement bolt hole on a side street off central Kreshchatyk, Baraban
bar is a favourite with journalists, expats and politicians, with live music
most nights. Extremely difficult to find, it's directly behind a restaurant,
100 metres up Prorizna.

Taras Shevchenko National Opera House of Ukraine
World-class culture
Kiev's opera house, a short walk from Kreshchatyk, is among Europe's best,
with ticket prices to suit all pockets. Housed in a lavish
turn-of-the-century building, its ballet company performs classics including

Figaro.
