Restaurants in Montreal

Experience Québécois twists to French influences at Le Club Chasse et Pêche in Old Montreal. Head to the Plateau for winning bistros like Au Pied de Cochon, and an array of good-value ethnic restaurants. Mile End's best Greek food is at Milos; Chinatown and Little Italy offer the expected cuisines. Montrealers dine from 7pm/8pm until 10pm/11pm then stay for drinks, but many small bistros close Sunday or Monday. Tipping at 15% is the norm.

Kaizen

Outstanding sushi

Just outside downtown in Westmount, Kaizen is worth the trip for its extensive menu of sushi, sashimi and maki. The eclectic décor makes some nods to Japan, but the fish-tail chairs at the sushi bar are unique. Try the kobe beef burger for lunch on the terrace. There's live jazz Monday and Tuesday.

La Montée

Inventive, delectable cooking

On a quiet Plateau corner, the pale woods and clean lines inside downtown restaurant La Montée are a surprise. So is the menu. Choose four or seven small plates in any order - venison tartare, seared scallops, aubergine pancake with goat's cheese. They're all exquisite and precisely presented. Save the mini crèmes brûlées for last.

Le Club Chasse et Pêche

Contemporary surf & turf

Le Club Chasse et Pêche (Hunting and Fishing Club) has no sign out front, and the cavern-like interior has a haphazard design, but this addition to the Old Montreal scene has drawn praise from local foodies. Starters include briny oysters with unusual dressings. Surf 'n' Turf may be lobster and rabbit.

Milos

Fresh, first-class ingredients

Although Milos is north of downtown in the Greek Mile End, it still draws Hollywood stars and lesser mortals for its premium quality fish and seafood. The decor is simple and chic, evoking a taverna feel. The success of the food lies in simple but top-notch ingredients expertly prepared. Lunch and Sundays are more affordable.

L'Express

Parisian bistro

This Plateau institution feels like a small part of Paris. The food is fairly priced for a place busy from breakfast until after midnight. After a substantial starter like bone marrow, opt for full-flavoured duck breast with chewy chanterelles or stop by for a croque monsieur. L'Express serves honest, unpretentious food which is thoroughly satisfying.

Au Pied de Cochon

Carnivore heaven

Though it looks like a typical Plateau restaurant, Au Pied de Cochon is packed six nights a week (try after 9pm). Leave cholesterol concerns at the door: this is all about slabs of beef, pork, lamb, venison and duck roasted to a falling-off-the-bone turn. Foie gras comes in several unusual but popular combinations.

Garde Manger

Eclectic cuisine and decor

Garde Manger turned the Old Montreal dining scene on its head with its quirky décor, irreverence (rock soundtrack, deep-fried Mars bars for dessert) and attitude towards keeping seafood prices low. If the monster seafood platter doesn't appeal, choose well-cooked bavette (hanger steak) or a blackboard special. The party atmosphere continues until late.
