    Restaurants in Las Vegas

Some of the world's top dining destinations are on The Strip, with epicurean French feasts at Joël Robuchon and Picasso. Near The Strip you'll find budget selections without sacrificing quality, including Thai masterpieces at Lotus of Siam and Italian sub sandwiches at Capriotti's. Some restaurants are only open for dinner after 5pm but family/budget options mostly serve breakfast and lunch as well. It's common to add a 15% tip for good service.

The concept of an all-you-can-eat buffet brings to mind trays and food kept warm for hours on end. The Buffet at Wynn Las Vegas on The Strip couldn't be more different, with delightful English garden surroundings and a vast selection of food worthy of many traditional restaurants. Bustling open cooking stations provide made-to-order delights.

    Alizé

    Food with a view

It's hard to say what commands more attention at Alizé - the sweeping views from 40 floors up or the stunning French cuisine. Near The Strip, local Chef André Rochat and his epicurean skills produce masterpieces at this restaurant. If the green peppercorn-encrusted fillet is on the menu, make sure you order it.

Award-winning chef Julian Serrano's Picasso on The Strip is regarded as one of the finest restaurants in America. Joël Robuchon/L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon

    Cuisine worth shouting about

Famed Chef Robuchon was lured out of retirement to open his namesake restaurants on The Strip. Winner of enough epicurean awards to fill a warehouse, the fine French creations at Joël Robuchon are outrageously expensive but well worth it. The more casual L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon is slightly cheaper but the food no less special.

    Austins Steakhouse

    Beef lovers' paradise

Steakhouses are a dime a dozen in Vegas, usually overpriced or underwhelming, but Austins Steakhouse in North Las Vegas hits the spot with superior steaks/chops at prices that won't break the budget. A casually elegant environment and great staff complete the package. Try the fillet - almost tender enough to cut with a fork.

    Mesa Grill

    Tex-Mex specialities

Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill on The Strip serves up a mix of Southwestern US cuisine but it is his quesadillas, prepared in a specially constructed oven, that are the real stars of the show. The festive room is perfect for large gatherings, and there are more than 250 varieties of tequila available.

    Le Village Buffet

    Fine French buffet dishes

Designed to resemble a French countryside town, the dining room is just the first surprise at Le Village Buffet on The Strip. The second is the food, all fresh and finely prepared with an emphasis on regional specialities from Provence and Burgundy, among others. Visit the hand-made crêpe station to cap it all off.

    Red 8

    Asian barbecues

Located in the opulent Wynn Las Vegas casino resort on The Strip, Red 8 serves everything from Dim Sum and Cantonese noodles to Hong Kong barbecue. The surroundings are sumptuous, with Chinese-styled black and deep red panelled walls, but the atmosphere remains casual. The barbecue pork buns are especially recommended.

    Hash House a Go-Go

    Alternative farm food

The delirious takes on American farm food at Hash House a Go-Go in West Las Vegas are astounding in both presentation and flavour. Breakfasts with their signature hashes, pancakes, waffles, and eggs of all kinds are the primary lure but dinner selections are just as delicious. Portions are enormous and meant to be shared.

    Lotus of Siam

    Thai spice

No less than Gourmet magazine picked Lotus of Siam, a hole-in-the-wall joint near The Strip, as the best Thai restaurant in North America. High praise indeed, but justified for their traditional and hard-to-find dishes all bursting with flavour at prices that should be three times what they are for food this good.

    M&M Soul Food

    Traditional southern US cooking

The southern US is renowned for its deep-fried flavours and tangy barbecue and M&M Soul Food near The Strip is faithful to the cause. The fried chicken, smothered in gravy, is a cholesterol watcher's nightmare but so good you won't care. The neighbourhood is a bit dodgy at night so go during daylight.

Main Street Station Garden Court Buffet

    What buffets should be

The Main Street Station Garden Court Buffet in Downtown is one of the best examples of the all-you-can-eat-style restaurant in town. A beautiful garden-style dining room charms while seemingly endless varieties of food from brick-oven pizzas to Hawaiian specialities are on offer. The fact that it is inexpensive is merely a bonus.

    Capriotti's

    Subs worth sharing

The giant submarine sandwiches at Capriotti's near The Strip are packed with fine cuts of meat and tangy seasonings; regular sandwiches will never taste the same again. Try a traditional Italian or go for a fun option like 'The Bobbie', emulating Thanksgiving in a roll with turkey, cranberry sauce and, of course, stuffing.

    Margaritaville

    Margaritas and American food

You needn't be one of singer Jimmy Buffet's 'parrot-head' acolytes to enjoy Margaritaville on The Strip, since the American dishes - many with Caribbean influences - go beyond the usual theme restaurant offerings in both flavour and value. Don't miss the margarita-spewing volcano for some fun, and the outdoor patios for good views.
