Melbourne Airport is Australia's second-busiest international gateway, each year welcoming 28 million passengers to its four terminals. SkyBuses operate around the clock and make the 25 km (15.5 miles) journey to central Melbourne in just 20 minutes.
SkyBus shuttles run between the airport and central Melbourne's Southern Cross Station every 10 minutes during the day and half-hourly overnight. It's easily the best means of reaching the city, with plenty of room for luggage. The trip takes just 20 minutes. One-way fares are A$17, return fares A$28. Free hotel pick-ups can be arranged from the station between 6am–10pm weekdays, 7.30am–5.30pm weekends.
Various other public bus services run to destinations throughout the city.
Canary-yellow taxis queue up outside all terminals. The trip to central Melbourne takes 20 minutes and costs around AUS$50. Drivers don't expect to be tipped, but there is a AUS$2 parking fee levied by the airport that passengers must pay. Fares between 10pm-5am must be pre-paid.
Melbourne Airport is a 20-minute drive from the city via the Tullamarine Freeway and CityLink tollway. Allow 30 minutes at peak hour. Car hire is available from six companies operating from the ground floor of the short-term car park.
