Numismatic Museum

Money, money, money

Situated on charming colonial Po straat, lined with handsome buildings, the Centrale Bank van Suriname Numismatic Museum boasts an impressive coin and banknote collection. Many items date back to the early days of Dutch colonisation, including pieces from 1679.

Neve Shalom Synagogue

Jewish history

Situated over a large area between Keizerstraat and Wagenwegstraat, Paramaribo's Neve Shalom Synagogue is a wooden construction with a white columned portico and a ritual bathing house next door. Inside, its unique feature is its white sandy floor.

Presidential Palace

Opulent stately grandeur

The grand colonial-era Presidential Palace is a much photographed Paramaribo landmark, set among the flag-scattered greenery of Independence Square. The iconic, white structure outshines the dozen elegant wooden mansions that surround it. It's open on ceremonial occasions and Independence Day.

Fort Zeelandia

Historically notorious fortress

British-built in 1651, this former fortress was once used as a place of torture for political prisoners. Today, Fort Zeelandia houses historical artefacts in the celebrated Stichting Surinaams Museum on Abraham Crijnssenweg.

Historical Plantation Tour

Palm Gardens

Trees and leafy gardens

A father's touching memorial to his lost son is hidden amid the Palm Gardens' cluster of soaring, needle-thin palms. The cherubic bronze is marked by a plaque tucked amongst the greenery in Independence Square, urging parents to watch their young.
