Ground Zero: A very special place

The ever visible Twin Towers, once the tallest buildings in the world, were an icon of New York City for years. The spot where the towers previously stood is now occupied by an impressive tribute to the victims. And work is ongoing on new skyscrapers that will fill the gap in New York’s skyline.

The Twin Towers were the pride of New York. The tallest of the seven buildings constituting the World Trade Center, the towers were a whopping 110 storeys high and provided office space for dozens of companies. This all came to an abrupt end on 11 September 2001 when two hijacked planes smashed into the buildings.

Memorable monument

While clearing the rubble was hard work and took a long time, the positive-minded Americans soon started making plans to make this a symbolic place once again. The 9/11 Memorial was unveiled ten years after the attacks, on 11 September 2011. Two water basins were placed in the spots where the Twin Towers had stood, with water streaming down from the edge. Bronze plates around the basins display the engraved names of all the victims. This is a place for silent contemplation.

The Memorial also includes a museum which tells the story of 11 September 2001 in word, image and sound.

The creation of new icons

Ground zero New York

The construction of a new World Trade Center is in full swing, and five new towers will soon be completed here. The name of the highest new skyscraper is clear and symbolic: Freedom Tower. Once it is opened, it will offer 280,000 square metres of office space spread over 104 floors. The building will be 1776 feet (more than 500 metres) tall, making it higher than the Twin Towers. The height is also symbolic: 1776 was the year in which the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Four other buildings will join the Freedom Tower on the site of the former World Trade Center.
