The five best beaches of Barcelona

It came as no surprise when National Geographic listed the beaches of Barcelona as the world’s greatest. Nothing quite beats taking a refreshing dip after a long day spent exploring the city. Since the Olympics in 1992, Barcelona has invested enormous sums to keep the sand and water clean. And it shows!

1. Bogatell

Bogatell is one of Barcelona’s most popular beaches. It is connected to a long stone boulevard that is ideal for running, skating or cycling. Due to the raised promenade you hardly notice the city traffic. The beach clubs at Bogatell often have a relaxed vibe and play trendy music.

2. Barceloneta

Barceloneta

The city’s longest beach, Barceloneta features lots of hip bars serving tasty snacks and drinks. La Barceloneta is mainly popular with tourists and groups of young residents, making it one of the most crowded (and social) beaches of Barcelona. La Barceloneta offers plenty of recreational facilities, including three beach-volley courts, table tennis and playground equipment for kids.

3. Nova Icaria

Nova Icaria Barcelona

This beach with coarse sand is located closest to the Olympic marina, and is perfect for people who want to end a day of sunshine with a sumptuous dinner. The adjoining boulevard offers various high-quality beach clubs, popular restaurants and many bars. Nova Icaria is much loved by families with kids and groups of friends. The beach borders on the popular nightlife district of El Puerto Olímpico and is easily accessible.

4. San Sebastiá

The beach of San Sebastiá, located between the Vela Hotel and the Barceloneta district, is one of the city’s longest. San Sebastiá is relatively quiet compared to the other beaches, and attracts slightly older visitors. Popular among watersport enthusiasts such as windsurfers and sailors, the beach is also easily accessible to the disabled.

5. Mar Bella

Mar bella beach Barcelona

Mar Bella is a small beach that mainly attracts young visitors. The first part features the only nudist beach in the city. Nearby is a small park that is perfect for a picnic or siesta in the shade. Just behind Bogatell is a basketball court and a special zone for skaters. Other popular activities include windsurfing, sailing and kayaking, for which the equipment can be rented on site.
