Like most of the Netherlands, Rotterdam has a temperate oceanic climate, though its position on the coast gives it slightly milder weather than cities further inland. Summers (June to August) are warm but rarely get too hot, with average temperatures staying between 60°F (16°C) and 72°C (22°C) and roughly ten rainy days each month. The days are long and sunny, and many residents head to the beach. Temperatures cool off a bit as autumn gives way to winter; however, it stays fairly mild and doesn't often dip below 25°F (-4°C). Late autumn and early winter (October to December) tend to be the wettest months, while April and May are the driest. The best time to visit Rotterdam is in late spring (May and June); however, the weather tends to be unpredictable and visitors should always be prepared for sudden showers or swings in temperature.
To use public transport in Rotterdam, you'll need to buy a 'OV-Chipkaart' (Public Transport Chip Card), which is usable for all metro, tram, and bus lines operated by RET. Tourists can buy an anonymous OV-Chipkaart for €7.50 from ticket machines in all metro and train stations. ARRIVA and Connexxion buses operate outside the metropolitan area. Taxis are available from taxi ranks or by telephone: the minimum charge is €2.30, and each subsequent kilometre costs €2.20. A cheaper option are the Thai-influenced tuk-tuks, which operate on a zone system and charge fares starting at €3.50 for one person and €5 for two people. Like most Dutch cities, Rotterdam is very bicycle-friendly with separate lanes and traffic lights for cyclists. Bicycles are often the fastest way to travel in Rotterdam, and are available to hire near the Central Station.
RandstadRail, a high-speed train, connects the airport from The Hague, Leidschendam, Pijacker, Zoetermeer and Rotterdam Central Station. From the central station you can catch trains to Antwerp, Brussels and Paris. To use public transport, you'll need to buy a 'OV-Chipkaart' (Public Transport Chip Card) from a newsagent at the airport. The RET bus 50 connects to the Meijersplein metro station, where you can transfer to Line E to the city centre; a round trip of about 20 minutes overall. For a more direct route, the No. 33 bus will get you to Rotterdam Central Station in about 25 minutes. The B12 line operates at night and in the early morning.
Major car rental companies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, Sixt and Europcar have desks in the arrivals section.
Taxis are available directly outside the terminal building.
There is just one terminal building, easily navigable on foot.
Airport facilities include banks, ATMs and currency exchange, information desks, conference facilities, and a business lounge, a post office, travel agents, baby-changing stations, and a variety of shopping and dining options.
Parking is available in any of the three parking lots: P1, P2 and P3. P1 and P3 are the long-term lots, while P2 is the short-term lot. All the parking lots are easily accessible from the terminal.
Wifi is available for free throughout the airport.
