KLM Cargo
KLM Cargo is one of KLM’s three business units. The other two are Passenger Services and Engineering & Maintenance. KLM Cargo is responsible for transporting cargo. This kind of transport not only includes all kinds of goods such as flowers, telephones, computer accessories, parts for cars and aircraft, clothes and post, but also includes transporting live animals like chickens and horses. The Cargo business unit makes sure that the cargo being transported on the aircraft arrives at the correct destination as quickly as possible in the best possible state. In this way, KLM Cargo offers its customers the best service possible.
Each year, KLM Cargo and its partner airlines transport cargo to around 185 destinations throughout the world. Cargo is transported in almost all of the aircraft in the KLM fleet. KLM operates a number of real "cargo aircraft" which only transport cargo, as well as aircraft in which passengers are seated in the front section and cargo in the rear. But cargo is also often transported in normal passenger aircraft, in the belly of the aircraft where the baggage is carried. Each year, KLM Cargo transports around 600,000 tons of cargo.
Almost 2,500 people work at KLM Cargo – most of them in the Netherlands but some of them work at offices spread around the world. The people who work at KLM Cargo understand lots about different types of cargo needing special packaging or special care during handling, such as flowers or live animals, or very big machines. They work together in specialized teams. Because of this, the people who work for the different workgroups know everything there is to know about their products – at home in the Netherlands and abroad.
On October 1, 2005, the commercial activities carried out by KLM Cargo were integrated with the same activities at Air France Cargo. Around 2,200 people work in the combined commercial organization.
