Engine Water Wash at KLM Engineering & Maintenance

KLM Engineering & Maintenance is one of the world’s largest, airline-allied providers of maintenance, repair and overhaul services. KLM Engineering & Maintenance is located at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and offers a wide array of customized products and services.

Did you know?

KLM's Engine Water Wash method is the first of its kind in aircraft maintenance worldwide. The Engine Water Wash program can be carried out at the same time as a routine technical aircraft check in the hangar, without required additional ground time. KLM Engineering & Maintenance intends to introduce the Engine Water Wash program for its entire fleet in the near future.

What are we doing?

The water wash method involves spraying about a hundred liters of water into the front of the engine, several times in succession. During this process, the engine is turning but not burning. This produces a washing machine effect, whereby the engine cleans itself. Any vapors released during this process are filtered, and the air emitted by the engine is actually cleaner than the ambient air in the hangar.

What is the result?

Engine washing reduces fuel consumption and the emission of CO2 and other substances from the engine during flight.
