Wind Project Bonaire

The Netherlands branch of the WWF has reached agreements with KLM on reducing and compensating for CO2 emissions through Gold Standard projects. KLM is investing in the Gold Standard-certified Wind Project Bonaire through the compensation service CO2ZERO.

This wind farm is part of a large-scale project on Bonaire. The project’s aim is to for the entire island – around 5000 homes and businesses – ultimately to be supplied with 100% renewable energy.

Construction of the wind farm began in  January 2009 and the first energy is expected to be produced by the end of the year. The wind turbines generate 23 megawatts of electricity, which will man an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 30,000 tons! 20 people are employed on the wind farm’s construction and its upkeep will provide four permanent jobs for the local population. Part of the project entails providing the island’s inhabitants with tips on how to save energy and water.

The wind farm lies off the north coast of Bonaire, in the area known as Morotin. It is 4 km from the nearest village, Rincon, which is out of sight of the wind farm. This location was chosen because it would lead to as little visual pollution as possible. The wind turbines are positioned in such a way that they follow the natural line of the coast.
