Challenges and Considerations

Corporate social responsibility presents many challenges. A direct flight approach to airports may be better for the environment, but an indirect path may mean less noise impact for local residents. Legislation dictates that any unused food aboard an aircraft should be burnt upon arrival, even if it is completely fresh. Should we suspend services to an unprofitable destination at the cost of affecting loyal staff?

At KLM, corporate social responsibility is an integral part of our policy. People, Planet, Profit – those are the cornerstones, and it is our aim to strike a balance between all three. This we must do in dialogue with our surroundings. Sometimes, however, we must make choices. Competition, legislation, and technological developments are all factors in this process.

Now or Later

Another important choice: Should we do it now or leave it as an ambition for the future? This is a question of priority, effectiveness, and money. KLM pursues both short and long-term policy. Right now, KLM is paying a great deal of attention to the Single European Sky and the Emissions Trading Scheme. This why KLM is collaborating with manufacturers and research institutes to find innovative, sustainable solutions for the future.
