KLM in Dialogue With its Neighbors
Air travel is growing. Fortunately, KLM is also achieving profitable growth. But this also means there is a growing need to expand our national airport, which increase noise impact in the surrounding communities.

KLM works hard to strike a balance between all the pros and cons of air travel. We do this by using quieter aircraft engines and better flight procedures. But we also make a major contribution to noise insulation projects in residential areas around Schiphol Airport.
What are we doing?
As an active participant of the Schiphol Regional Review Board, KLM works with representatives of local residential bodies to develop measures that make a real difference in reducing impact in their communities. We also work closely with local groups to create operational measures to reduce noise nuisance. Some of these measures can be implemented immediately. Others must first be tested.
What is the result?
At night, KLM aircraft follow the Continuous Descent Approach procedure. They have special navigational equipment for this purpose. This ensures that KLM aircraft can make long approaches from over the sea. KLM also makes use of such techniques as idle reverse power and delayed and reduced flaps. KLM uses a departure technique, which has the most suitable effect for the community close to the airport.
The Schiphol Regional Review Board has established a Knowledge and Development Center (KDC) that coordinates all experiments suggested by local groups concerning runway and route utilization at the airport. Within the KDC, KLM works with industry partners such as Schiphol Airport and Air Traffic Control the Netherlands to ensure maximum accessibility of Schiphol by air.
