How much baggage can I bring?
Your exact baggage allowance is always stated on your ticket, and in Manage my Booking. The table below gives you our general baggage rules.
At the airport, each piece of baggage is weighed separately. If your baggage exceeds the allowed amount, weight and/or dimensions, this is considered excess baggage. You can bring this at an excess baggage fee.
Some of our partner airlines have different baggage rules to our own. Please contact your travel agency or the airline concerned for further details.

Extra baggage at a discount
Each piece of check-in luggage may weigh up to 23 kg (50.5 lbs) in Economy Class and 32 kg (70.5 lbs) in Business Class. For each piece of check-in baggage that weighs more, you will need to pay a fee. Any piece of baggage that weighs more than 32 kg (70.5 lbs) will have to be transported as cargo.
However, you can also take an extra piece of luggage at a low standard fee. Take advantage of this discount of 20% or more on the excess baggage fee by arranging it:
- when booking online
- via Manage my Booking
- when you check in online
Arranging extra baggage online is possible only if your flight is operated by KLM.
Arranging extra baggage online at KLM.com is not possible if you will be departing from Australia, Cyprus, The Czech Republic, France, Germany (Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt), Ireland or the United States (except from Chicago, San Francisco or Washington DC). You can then arrange your extra baggage at the airport. This means that the discount will not apply.

Travelling to and from the United States
Through the end of 2012, Economy Class passengers travelling from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the United States will need to check in and drop off their baggage in departure hall 3. SkyPriority passengers (Business Class and SkyTeam Elite Plus members) can check in and drop off baggage in departure hall 2.
Note: printers or toner cartridges weighing 453 grams or more may not be taken in your baggage on board flights to the United States. This applies to both hand baggage and check-in baggage.
You may not lock your bags as the United States authorities will check baggage for explosives.
Are you travelling to the United States and then transferring to a domestic flight or a flight to Canada? In that case, you must always collect your baggage when transferring flights and check it in again at a baggage drop-off point.

Baggage for children younger than 2 years
You may take the following amount of baggage for a child younger than 2 years who does not have a booked seat:
- One piece of check-in baggage with items for baby care, not exceeding 10 kg (22 lbs).
- A fully collapsible stroller or pram. You may check this in free of charge as check-in baggage. A very small stroller may be carried as cabin baggage if space permits. This baby stroller/pram may have a protective cover but if this protective cover contains any other items, it will be considered to be an extra piece of baggage.
- One piece of hand baggage with essential baby care articles not exceeding 10 kg (22 lbs) and no larger than 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.5 x 13.5 x 10 inches).
If you have booked a seat for your child, you may take your own car/child seat on board. This seat must fit between the armrests of the aircraft seat and not exceed a width of 42 cm (16.5 inches). Only car/child seats that display no defects and bear a visible seal of approval awarded by the European Union or any other official government agency may be used on board.

Advance reservation is required if you wish to bring a car/child seat on board or require a seat for a second baby.
Special baggage
We are happy to transport your special baggage, such as sports equipment, medical devices and pets.
You always need to make a reservation for the transport of your special baggage at least 48 hours before departure. This can be done easily online through Manage my Booking or by calling KLM Telephone Reservations
You may take various types of sports equipment as part of your standard amount of baggage. If you bring these items in addition to your standard baggage allowance or bring any other special baggage, you will need to pay a fee.
Firearms, pointed, sharp edged or blunt items and explosive, flammable, chemical and toxic substances are prohibited. Special rules also apply to liquids carried in your hand baggage.
Special facilities and assistance are available for physically challenged passengers. These include taking the passenger’s own wheelchair on board.

Baggage and transferring
If your trip includes a transfer, your check-in baggage is usually labelled to be sent to your final destination. This means that your baggage will automatically be put onto the next flight.
There are a few exceptions to this rule:
• If you have purchased two or more tickets from different airlines that have dissimilar conditions
• If you transfer from an AIR FRANCE or KLM flight to a domestic flight such as a domestic flight in the United States
• If you arrive at one airport and depart from another airport
• If your transfer lasts longer than 12 hours and your next flight departs the next day
• If you make a stopover
• If part of your itinerary includes bus or rail transport
In these cases, your baggage will not automatically be sent on to your final destination. You will have to collect it and check it in again for the next leg in your flight schedule.
Your baggage's destination is stated on your baggage claim tag that you receive when dropping off your baggage.
Tips for packing
Make sure that your full name is stated both inside, and on the outside of each piece of your check-in baggage.
We advise to take these important items in your hand baggage:
- Travel documents
- Medication that you regularly need
- Keys
