      Back to Prepare for travel
Children aged up to 4 years old may only travel on our flights when accompanied by an adult. For children aged 5 to 14 years old that travel alone, the booking of our Unaccompanied Minor service is mandatory. If desired, the service can also be booked for children aged 15 to 17 years.

      The Unaccompanied Minor service

      Stewardess with child

With this service, you can rest assured that your child will receive special care and attention throughout the journey even in the event of delays. Your child will be continuously accompanied by our ground and cabin staff who are especially trained for this. The Unaccompanied Minor Service is mandatory for children aged 5 to 14 who are travelling alone. For children aged 15 to 17, the service is not mandatory, but can be reserved if required.

During a long transit at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, your child will be accommodated in our Junior Jet Lounge. Here he/she can have soft drinks, and can enjoy computer games, films, books in various languages and a variety of toys.

At the end of the journey, we will personally accompany your child to the person you have authorised to collect him/her.

Please note that upon arrival we will hand over your child in the arrival hall only to the person who is ‘authorized to meet child at final destination’ in the 'Handling Advice' form. We will not hand over your child to anyone representing a company or organization, so please enter a specific person’s name.

      Booking the service

The Unaccompanied Minor service has to be booked before the trip begins. It can only be booked either by telephone or through your travel agent. This also applies for booking a ticket for a child aged 5 to 14 travelling alone.

If your flight is operated by one of our partners, other rules may apply to unaccompanied children. Information can be provided either by your travel agent or directly by the airline itself.

      How it works

When making the booking, we will require information on your child. We will also record the contact information for the person who is booking the trip for the child so that we can keep you informed by phone, e-mail and text message about any changes in your child’s flight itinerary.

A child travelling alone can be checked in only at the airport. A parent or guardian aged 18 years or older must register the child at the check-in desk at least 2½ hours before departure.

After checking in the child and any of the child’s baggage at the airport, you must report to the KLM Service Desk to fill out and sign a ‘Handling Advice’ form. This form authorises us to accompany your child during his/her journey. At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the KLM Service Desk is located in Departure Hall 2. You could also download the ‘Handling Advice’ form from the website, print and fill out 3 copies and bring these, signed, with you to the airport.

The parent or other adult who takes the child to the airport and hands him/her over to us must always bring a valid form of identification. He or she must remain at the airport until the aircraft has departed.

Please note that upon arrival we will hand over your child only to the person who is ‘authorized to meet child at final destination’ in the 'Handling Advice' form. We will not hand over your child to anyone representing a company or organization, so please enter a specific person’s name.

      Costs

Regardless of the age of the child, the cost for the Unaccompanied Minor service is the price of an adult’s ticket, plus a service surcharge of EUR 50 for flights within Europe or EUR 75 for intercontinental flights. The surcharge is doubled for return tickets.

The supplement is automatically added to the total price of the ticket during the booking of the flight.
