Flying and caring for the environment can go hand in hand. Via an ambitious environmental programme and groundbreaking partnership with the World Wildlife Fund, KLM is showing the way. Now we can also offer you the chance to play your part as a passenger. Specifically for corporate clients, KLM has developed a unique CO2 Compensation Service.

    How it works

    klm co2 compensation

    1.      Biannual CO2 Compensation Report

Participate in the compensation service and your company will receive a biannual CO2 Compensation Report. This includes detailed management information on the flight behaviour of the past six months and associated CO2 emissions.

    2.      Payment

Your company pays KLM the compensation sum. All kilometres flown with KLM and our partners – AIR FRANCE and Kenya Airways – are offset. KLM invests all compensation funds directly in the development of energy projects and does not transfer any money to its partners.

    3.   KLM supports Gold Standard projects

KLM invests 100 percent of each compensation euro received into Gold Standard-projects: Carefully selected   and guaranteed climate-friendly energy projects around the world.

    Calculation examples

The offset costs of one ton of CO2 emissions are € 6.05. To illustrate:

    • Return flight Amsterdam – London: 86 kg CO2, compensation costs: € 0.52
    • Return flight Amsterdam – New York: 1,057 kg CO2, compensation costs: € 6.39
    • Return flight Amsterdam – Beijing: 1,560 kg CO2, compensation costs: € 9.44
    • Return flight Amsterdam – Lima: 1,650 kg CO2, compensation costs: € 9.98

    Benefits

    • This unique and easy service means you can offset the carbon footprint of your company’s flights at lowest costs within the aviation industry.
    • As all administration and control costs are paid by KLM, every cent of your contribution is invested. This is monitored by KPMG accountants.
    • All flights made by your company are simultaneously offset. Your employees need not offset individual flights.
    • Participation in the programme is voluntary.

Gold Standard – A quality hallmark

Gold Standard is an independent quality standard partly established by the international World Wildlife Fund. Projects with the Gold Standard label are carefully selected and produce sustainable energy using solar, wind and biomass power. Many Gold Standard projects are situated in Third World countries, helping both the environment and the local population. An absolute condition to receive the Gold Standard label is that the project would not be viable without the support of Gold Standard. Gold Standard is supported by dozens of NGOs. The World Wildlife Fund monitors the performance and quality of the projects.
