Checked baggage allowance
Extra security measures for hand baggage are in place at all airports
The amount of baggage that may be checked onto flights operated by KLM, Air France, Northwest Airlines and Kenya Airways free of charge, otherwise known as the baggage allowance, is stated below.
If your flight is operated by another KLM partner airline, enquire with your travel agent or with the operating carrier directly to find out whether any other baggage restrictions apply.
Please bear in mind that certain items are forbidden.

Checked baggage
The amount of baggage that you can take with you free of charge is determined according to either the number of pieces or the weight. The ‘allow’ box on your paper ticket indicates which of these concepts apply to your baggage allowance. On your e-ticket, this is indicated in the ‘baggage’ box.
- If the abbreviation PC appears in the ‘allow’ or ‘baggage’ box, the piece concept applies to your baggage allowance. The table below states the number of pieces of baggage that you can take with you free of charge. This concept only applies to flights to or from:
- USA, USA territories, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Panama City.
- KLM flights, including KL connecting code-share flights operated by Kenya Airways to or from: Ethiopia (Addis Ababa), Kenya (Nairobi and Mombassa), Sudan (Khartoum), Tanzania (Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam), Uganda (Entebbe), Burundi (Bujumbura), Zambia (Lusaka), Malawi (Lilongwe), Rwanda (Kigali) and Congo (Kinshasa).

Excess baggage
If you wish to take more baggage with you than the permitted free allowance, this can be transported as excess baggage for an additional fee. In order to prevent our check-in agent from incurring physical injury as a result of lifting heavy baggage, a single piece of baggage may not exceed 32 kg in weight. If this is, however, the case, please contact KLM Cargo on +31 (0)20 6498000.
Checked baggage for children under two years of age
For a child under two years of age without his or her own seat, you may check in one piece of baggage weighing no more than 10 kg free of charge. You can also bring a small, collapsible buggy with you as hand luggage, provided that it will fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead baggage compartment. Otherwise, the buggy can be checked into the hold free of charge.
Exceptions to baggage allowance
- Consent is required for the transport of sports equipment, electric wheelchairs, pets and musical instruments. To request consent for such items, please contact your travel agent or local KLM Reservations office.
If you are flying from Equador and back, or to/from Brazil, the Dutch/French Caribbean or Surinam, exceptions to the standard baggage allowance apply.
Some items may not be transported on your flight. This applies to both checked baggage and hand baggage.
- Please ensure that you do not lock your baggage if you are traveling to the USA, as it must be checked for explosives!
