Traveling (with) children
If you are traveling with children, you can take advantage of a number of our services. Special regulations also apply with regard to baggage allowance. You will find all the information you need on this page.
On this page:
Unaccompanied minors from 5 to 18 years of age
Children aged 5-14 who are travelling alone are required to make use of the unaccompanied minor service. For this reason, we are compelled to inform you that your child will be refused boarding privileges if you have not made arrangements for this service during the booking procedure. It is not possible to make these arrangements, however, when booking your flight at this website. Click here for more information about the unaccompanied minor service and how to book this service
The unaccompanied minor service can also be requested for children aged 15 through 18.
Children younger than 5 years of age may travel only if accompanied by their parent(s) or another person who is at least 18 years of age and who is capable of taking full responsibility for the child during the trip.
If your flight is operated by one of KLM’s partner airlines, other rules can apply to children travelling alone. For this reason, you should ask your travel agent about this or get information directly from that airline about its rules.
Junior Jet Service
The Junior Jet Service is a special provision for our youngest passengers. KLM is always committed to providing extra attention and special facilities for young children and their parents. Special activity packs and a range of baby items are available on board all intercontinental flights operated by KLM. Special children’s meals can be ordered in advance at no extra cost from KLM Reservations.
Traveling with children under two years of age
Children under two years of age can travel on your lap. An adult may travel with more than one baby, but only one baby may travel on his or her lap. A seat must be reserved for the other babies. All children who are aged two years or above on the date of travel must have a seat reserved. Cradles suitable for babies measuring no more than 65 cm and weighing no more than 10 kg on the date of travel can be reserved on intercontinental flights.
Baggage, prams and (car) child seats
You are permitted to take one piece of hand baggage on board your flight for children under two years of age who do not have their own seat. The maximum dimensions of this piece of baggage are 55 x 35 x 25 cm, and it may not exceed 10 kg in weight. You can also bring a small, collapsible buggy with you as hand baggage, provided that it will fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead baggage compartment. Otherwise, the buggy can be checked into the hold free of charge. In addition, you may check 1 piece of baggage weighing no more than 10 kg into the hold at no extra cost.
If a seat has been reserved for your child, you may bring your own (car) child seat aboard on the condition that it fits between the armrests of the aeroplane seat (42 cm/16.5 inches). Only children’s seats that display no defects and that carry a visible seal of quality awarded by the European Union or other official government agency may be taken aboard. A seat for a second baby or the use of a (car) child seat should be reserved in advance by contacting KLM Reservations or your local KLM ticket office.
The following seals of approval will be accepted aboard:
- UN STANDARDS ECE R44-03 and 44-04
- US FMVSS NO. 213
- CANADIAN CMVSS 213/123.1
- GERMAN TUV/958-01/2001
