Taking extra baggage
By paying an additional fee, you can check in more baggage than the amount normally permitted for free. Any baggage you take with you that exceeds the permitted free allowance is known as ‘excess baggage’. At the airport, you pay a standard excess baggage rate for this. But if you arrange it online, you get a 30% discount on this fee.
This discount applies only if your baggage is subject to the weight concept.
Arrange extra baggage during online check-in
You can pay for extra baggage during online check-in if:
- your flight is operated by KLM;
- your first flight is operated by KLM and you then transfer to a flight operated by Air France.
- This service is not available, however, when you depart from Canada, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru or the United States of America.
The 30% discount applies only if your baggage is subject to the weight concept used for determining baggage allowances.
You can pay for your extra baggage by credit card during online check-in.
Arranging extra baggage at KLM Reservations
Until 24 hours before departure, you can also arrange for extra baggage at AIR FRANCE/KLM ticket counters at airports and AIR FRANCE/KLM ticket offices. If you are a European passenger, you can also get a discount on extra baggage by contacting KLM Reservations. When you call KLM Reservations, you can receive the discount on extra baggage for weight concept on all flights operated by AIR FRANCE, KLM, Kenya Airways or Northwest Airlines.
The 30% discount on the standard excess baggage fee applies if your baggage is subject to the weight concept of measurement but not the piece concept.
Conditions applying to the pre-purchased extra baggage
If you paid for pre-purchased extra baggage but you ultimately make no use of it, KLM will not give you a refund (non-refundable).
If you bought additional baggage allowance to cover 10 kg. in excess baggage, but your baggage weighs only 5 kg. over the limit at the airport, it is not possible to get a refund on the unused baggage allowance. Read more about Compensation and refunds
It is not possible to pay in advance for the transport of pets and sports equipment as excess baggage. For these items, the standard excess baggage fee applies.
Additional baggage allowance is non-transferrable; once registered in the name of a certain person, this name cannot be changed.
