Special Feature: Abu Dhabi
Landmarks
- The city of Abu Dhabi has been capital of the United Arab Emirates since 1971. In 2006, it had 600,000 inhabitants, most of whom are expat workers.
- This 19th century pearl fishing centre has become a vast and modern metropolis: skyscrapers, banks and shopping centres have replaced fishermen's shacks.
- The city has gradually stretched into the desert. Today it boasts an international airport, a university, and industrial zones. A recent addition is a very large mosque, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque.
Worth visiting:
- The Al-Hosn palace, also known as the Old Fort or White Fort, is one of the city's rare buildings to be more than 30 years old. The lime washed walls, pretty inner courtyard and large ornate door form a striking contrast to the skyscrapers that surround it.
- The Cultural Foundation is home to a library as well as exhibitions on local history, Islamic art and ancient manuscripts.
- The dhow dock and fish market, in the North-East, offer a beautiful view over the city and a few good seafood restaurants. On the seafront, the old souk features a small gold market.
News : the Louvre in Abu Dhabi
- The Emirate has recently signed an agreement with the French government for the creation of a Louvre museum to focus on every civilization, every era, including contemporary.
- Construction will start this year on the island of Saadiyat. The project, under architect Jean Nouvel, will cover 24,000 m2, of which 8,000 m2 will be devoted to exhibition space.
- The cost of the project is estimated at 83 million euros and the museum will be called "Louvre Abu Dhabi" until 2037.
