Detailed information on Award tickets

Award tickets for you or anyone you choose

When it comes to choosing your Award flight or destination, you have a world of choice. Check out the following facts for guidance on Award tickets.

On this page:

Award tickets

Your Award ticket with SkyTeam and other partner airlines must be for a return flight. One-way tickets are only available on KLM and Air France flights (for half the number of Award Miles required for a return ticket).

You can book an Award ticket on eligible KLM, Air France, Kenya Airways and SkyTeam flights if there is an Award seat available when you book.

Your round-trip cannot include flight segments from different airlines, but you can combine in one Award ticket:

  • flights from all SkyTeam partners
  • Kenya Airways flights and SkyTeam flights
  • Air France and Aircalin flights

Some partners apply blackout dates for Award travel.

Check the Miles Finder for the number of Award Miles needed per destination.

Flex Award

When Award seats are not available, you can still order an Award seat* on eligible KLM, Air France, Kenya Airways and Northwest Airlines flights in exchange for twice the regular number of Miles. With this option it is also possible to make flight changes free of charge.
The Flex Award does not apply to Upgrade or Round-the-World Awards.

Using Open Miles to fly in First Class or Business Class is reserved for Flying Blue Elite members.

* certain conditions apply

Stopovers

You can make 1 single stopover (stop for more than 24 hours) on your round-trip providing the country of stopover and country of departure on your outbound journey are different.

  • In Europe, for example, if you fly Amsterdam – Toulouse – Madrid outbound, you can stop over in Toulouse. On the inbound Madrid – Toulouse – Amsterdam flight, it is no longer possible to stop over.
  • On an international route, for example Atlanta – New York – Paris (outbound) and Paris – New York – Atlanta (inbound), you cannot stop over in New York.

Stopovers are not available on one-way Award tickets from KLM and Air France. If, for example, you want to stop over in Paris between Amsterdam and Marseilles, you will have to book 2 separate Award tickets.

Open Jaws

Fly into one city and depart from another ('open jaw'), instead of taking a simple round-trip departing from and returning to the same city.

Your Award ticket can include 1 single Open Jaw, but only in the same Flying Blue Award zone. For example, your Open Jaw on Nice – Amsterdam (outbound) and London – Paris – Nice (inbound) is authorised; but the double Open Jaw on Amsterdam – Paris – New York (outbound) and Atlanta – Paris – London (inbound) is not authorised.

Round-the-World Award

This award is valid on SkyTeam airline partners only. Your Award ticket must include one transatlantic and one transpacific flight. All flight segments must be in the same direction without back-tracking (i.e., it is not possible to travel eastward first and then westward, or vice versa).

You can make a maximum of 6 stopovers, including a maximum of 3 on the same continent (America, Europe, Asia, Africa or Oceania).

Your Award can include 1 Open Jaw, which counts as a stopover.

No Flex Award is available.

Award ticket issuance

Your Award ticket will be issued as an electronic ticket (on e-ticket eligible routes and airlines). When e-ticketing is not available, your Award ticket will be sent to your mailing address.
Please allow 5 days for postal delivery in France or the Netherlands, 7 days in Europe and 14 days elsewhere.

Airport, security and other taxes and fees

You are responsible for paying all applicable taxes, fees, levies and surcharges, which vary depending on the country and the airport. You will be told how much is due when you make your reservation, and must pay by bank*/credit card when your ticket is issued.

* at designated airport ticket offices only

Remember to complete all administrative formalities such as visas, taxes and vaccinations prior to departure.

Changes after issuance

Your Award ticket is valid for one year from the date of issuance. If, for any reason, you need to change your Award ticket after it has been issued, you can make your request by calling the Flying Blue Service Centre. Once your Award ticket has been issued, you may change your booking at a charge of € 45 per person who is listed in the booking.

On SkyTeam airlines, you can change:

  • before first departure: date / flight number / routing in the same Award zone / SkyTeam airline / number of flight coupons
  • after departure: date / flight number / SkyTeam airline

As a rule, your Award ticket is issued as an e-ticket (on e-ticket eligible routes and airlines). When you change your ticket your new electronic Award ticket will be reissued immediately. If e-ticketing is unavailable, you must collect your paper ticket at any KLM or Air France ticket office within no more than 4 days after changing it.

These changes are free of charge with the Flying Blue Flex Award, valid on eligible KLM, Air France, Kenya Airways and Northwest Airlines flights only.
Promo Award@ may not be modified, cancelled or refunded.

With other airline partners, you can change:

  • before departure: date / flight number / routing in the same Award zone / number of flight coupons
  • after departure: date / flight number
  • Your cancellation and new booking must be made at the same time.
  • If no suitable alternative date can be found, the total number of Award Miles and taxes may be refunded for a fee of € 45 per passenger before departure only.
  • The € 45 charge for modification applies to every single request (whatever the number of changes requested at the same time) and for each ticket.
