Passport and visa
Every country has its own rules for visitors of various nationalities. When visiting certain countries, for example, your passport has to be valid for at least another six months following your return to the Netherlands. Certain countries also require a visa. You can request a visa from the embassy of the country you will be visiting; some countries grant visas upon your arrival.
Important:
- as of 26 June 2012, children travelling from, to or through countries in the European Union will also need to carry their own passport. Having their names entered in their parent’s passport will no longer be permitted.
- travellers to the United States will also have to request supplementary travel authorization from ESTA.

Advance Passenger Information
The authorities at certain destinations or originating countries require various types of personal information during the reservation and/or check-in process. This data is used for determining entry into and departure from these countries. This includes some flights that travel through the U.S. airspace. KLM is therefore required to collect this personal information prior to departure. If applicable, the reservation and check-in system will guide you through the process. If applicable, the reservation and check-in system will guide you through the process.
The API data includes information on the machine-readable zone on your passport:
• Family name and first name
• Date of birth and gender
• Passport number
• Country that issued the passport
• Passport expiration date
• Nationality
• Country of residence (for travel to the United States only)
• Temporary address where you will be staying (for travel to the United States only). This address must include the house number, street, city/town, abbreviation used for the state and the zip code.
We recommend that you provide this information as early as possible by contacting your travel agent or entering it at My Trip or during online check-in. If checking in online is not possible, you can also enter the necessary data at a self-service check-in machine at the airport. If you depart from an airport where you can only check in at the desk, our staff will register the API data taken from your passport.
When traveling to the United States, there are some exceptions in which you do not have to provide Advance Passenger Information.

Immunizations and precautionary measures
Before travelling to many tropical/subtropical destinations, immunizations and other precautionary measures are advisable or even required. Often, these measures must be taken a certain length of time prior to your departure. Make sure to get the right information about the area you will be visiting four to six weeks before your departure. You can contact one of the KLM Travel Clinic locations. These locations are listed at the bottom of this page.
Some countries require airlines to treat the interior of passenger cabins with insecticides. For more information, please consult http://ostpxweb.dot.gov/policy/safetyenergyenv/disinsection.htm
