20 August 2009 | Enjoy the ‘honest’ taste of Verkade’s Fair Trade chocolate during your KLM flight

    Fair Trade chocolate

The biscuit and chocolate manufacturer Verkade, recently announced that from now on the only chocolate that it will market is Fair Trade certified chocolate. Verkade’s chocolate has already received the Max Havelaar stamp, the organisation certifying Fair Trade products in the Netherlands, guaranteeing the consumer that the farmers receive a fair price for their products. A good initiative, and one supported wholeheartedly by KLM. From 1 July onwards Fair Trade chocolate will be available for passengers on board.

    Corporate responsibility

KLM strives to be at the forefront of corporate social responsibility. We are constantly on the look out for new, sustainable products. The more ideas the better, so for years we have been encouraging our colleagues to help us think of new products. The idea of having ‘honest’ chocolate on board came from one of our cabin crew.

    Responsible products

    Responsible products

We are carrying more and more sustainable and responsible products on board, and the Verkade chocolate bars really fit within this product range’, explains flight attendant Maaike Carli-Yang. When she wrote to management about the Fair Trade chocolate, the ball started rolling. KLM was already serving ‘honest’ coffee and sustainably caught fish on board.

    The Body Shop products

Another first is the sale of The Body Shop products on board. A complete travel kit, the Plane Travel Needs, became part of our tax free collection. The kit contains shampoo, body lotion, conditioner, shower gel, foot cream and lip butter – all in handy reusable travel sized packaging made from recycled materials. EUR 19 will get you this exclusive treat.
