What are our preferred seats?
On board, we offer seats with specific advantages. You can choose a seat with extra legroom or a seat in a row of only two seats. Please note that some of our seats in a row of 2 can not fully recline and have no extra legroom.
Preferred seats are available on all flights operated by KLM. On European flights, we offer seats with extra legroom. On intercontinental flights, you can reserve a seat with extra legroom or a seat in a row of only two seats.
Coach Choice is a service available on flights operated by Northwest Airlines (NWA). With Coach Choice, you can be assured of a window or an aisle seat, even if you check in late.
When can you opt for one of our preferred seats?
You can select a seat with extra legroom or a seat in a row with only two seats when you check in online. This can be done starting 30 hours before departure (24 hours if travelling to the United States). You can also select a seat, subject to availability, at a self-service check-in or transfer machine at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
You can reserve a preferred seat on any flight operated by KLM when you check in online, between 30 hours and 1 hour before departure (24 hours to 1 hour when travelling to the US). Because the number of our preferred seats is limited, we advise you to check in online as early as possible if you want to reserve one of these seats. We will do our utmost to honour your request. However, due to unforeseen circumstances we could decide to reallocate your seat.
It is not possible to reserve a preferred seat if you will be departing from the United States of America, Ecuador or Peru. Coach Choice is available on flights operated by Northwest Airlines from Amsterdam with the following destinations:
- Boston
- Detroit
- Hartford/Springfield
- Memphis
- Minneapolis
- New York (Newark International Airport)
- Portland (Oregon)
- Seattle
Preferred seats: pricing and paying
A preferred seat reservation is valid per seat and per flight. Preferred seats can only be paid for by credit card.

Flying Blue members
If you are a Platinum or Gold member of Flying Blue or WorldPerks, you can reserve your seat with extra legroom or a seat in a row of just 2 seats free of cost. Because the number of preferred seats is limited, we advise you to check in online and reserve your preferred seat in good time.
