Delta, Air France, KLM and Alitalia – via a number of intermediary stages –have entered into an intensive and long-term joint venture. The aim is to offer customers an optimal and economically sound network between Europe and the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The financial results of the four participants on the North Atlantic routes are consolidated within the joint venture. The principle underlying this construction is that sharing revenues, costs and risks between several parties will facilitate a more extensive, efficient and cheaper network.

KLM and Northwest developed this model successfully over many years and it is now seen by growing numbers of airlines as a blueprint for joint ventures.

The transatlantic joint venture in its current form came about in 2010, when Alitalia joined the pre-existing joint venture between Delta, Air France and KLM.
