Skiing between Switzerland and France

Between Lake Geneva and the peaks of the Alps lies the Swiss city of Geneva. The city offers access to many ski resorts in Switzerland. The beautiful French slopes are also within easy reach. In addition to being a fabulous winter sports destination, the city also offers enough other attractions to make this a fun city trip as well.

Lake Geneva - with its famous 140-metre-high fountain - is one of Geneva’s biggest attractions. In winter, the snow-covered shores of the lake make for a great walk. And the city is of course the perfect destination after an active day in the snow; relax in one of the many local restaurants over a Swiss cheese fondue or an Alpine pasta dish.

Plenty of options in the areas around Geneva

Swiss ski resorts

The list of ski areas in the vicinity of Geneva is truly impressive. Leysin, a pleasant family-friendly village with an international flair, offers a variety of blue runs for beginners and a snow park with a half-pipe for snowboarders. Those who are looking for more challenging runs may prefer the Villars-Gryon area, just 30 minutes from Geneva. The region extends over 5 inter-connected areas with a large network of blue, red and black runs. The highest point is the Glacier 3000. The summit of this glacier sits at a 3,000-metre elevation. From here you will be rewarded with breathtaking views.

The mountains of Chamonix

Skiing at the neighbours

Within just an hour drive from Geneva lies one of the most beautiful ski areas in France. Expect to be surprised by the understated luxury of Megève or the sweeping views of the Grand Massif. Another popular destination is Chamonix, a village at the foot of Mont Blanc, where you can access various inter-connected ski resorts. From the village, a cable car whisks visitors and off-piste skiers to the top of Aiguille du Midi. From this 3,800-metre-high top there are only off-piste glacier runs back to the valley. A professional mountain guide is highly recommended and the “Midi” offers an unforgettable descent.

Entrance to the ice cave under the Mer de Glace glacier

Spectacular ice cave

Another attraction is the ice cave in the Mer de Glace glacier. Carved out of the glacier ice the cave displays impressive ice sculptures. The glacier moves approximately 70 metres a year so the cave has to be carved out each year. To reach the cave, you will have to climb the 398-step stairway from the gondola.
